He served as a rifleman with the 27th Infantry Division, 165th Infantry Regiment. He deployed to Honolulu, Hawaii in May. Barclay participated in the Battle of Makin in November, the Battle of Saipan in mid-1944, the Battle of Okinawa in April of 1945. He received his discharge in November.
