Description: The photo shows the Harrison County Courthouse burning on June 7, 1899. Materials left by a repairman working on the roof caught fire. Several groups, including a man on a horse, watch from N. Washington St. This was the third county courthouse, completed in 1889. Designed by Tozer & McQuirk of Dallas, local builder James Higgins did the construction. Description: The old Harrison County Courthouse is the fourth, erected in 1900 to replace the third one which burned in 1899. This view is of the north and east facades, during the 1960's or 1970's. Houston St., which circles the square on its east-west route, is in the foreground. [Third Anderson County Courthouse]

Description: In 1885, Palestine, like most of the country, was in the midst of a depression, complicated by a series of railroad strikes, so there was little new construction. However, Anderson County had to have a new courthouse because the old one was literally falling down.
