Oral History Interview with Robert Cwalino, October 17, 2003

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Cwalino. Cwalino joined the Navy in 1943. He served as a Gunner’s Mate aboard USS David W. Taylor (DD-551) through the ship’s decommissioning in August of 1946. They traveled to Iwo Jima, Tarawa and to the Philippines, escorting carriers and covering landings with naval gunfire. Cwalino was discharged in late 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Arthur Holtz. Holtz joined the Navy around 1942. Beginning July of 1944, he served as a First-Class Shipfitter aboard USS Canotia (AN-47), a net laying ship. They traveled to Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok. From February to April of 1945, they completed mooring and salvage duty at Iwo Jima. They traveled to Guam for repairs and Ulithi to install and maintain nets. Holtz was discharged in early 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Leroy Raeber. Raeber joined the Navy in October of 1942. He served with the 62nd Naval Mobile Construction Battalion, and on Admiral Chester Nimitz’s maintenance staff. Raeber was stationed on Iwo Jima from 25 February through 1 May 1945, building a seawater conversion tank, filtering salt water to drinking water. He received a discharge in October of 1945.
