He served with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marine Regiment, participating in the Battle of Peleliu. In October of 1944, Clay transferred to the 6th Marine Division, 29th Marine Regiment, serving in the Battle of Okinawa. He served occupation duty in China after the war ended.
