[Longview Volunteer Fire Company]

Description: Photograph of the first Longview Volunteer Fire Company in Longview, Texas. The fire company was organized in 1885 using horse drawn fire carts. The fire company was located on the south side of Tyler Street between Fredonia and Center streets. City Hall was located upstairs. There are three horse-drawn fire carts parked outside the station.

[Fire Wagon]

Description: Photograph of a horse-drawn fire wagon stopped in the middle of an un-paved main street in front of a row of storefronts; a sign on the wagon says "Colorado No. 2, A Unit for the Dam, 44 Members - Strong." Other carriages are visible in the background and people are standing in the windows and on the first-floor roofs of the stores. The stores include Gammel's Used Books, J.O.Buaas, Phil Bruckmann Painter and Decorator, and a drug store.

Fire-Escape.

Description: Patent for a fire escape "with a cord or rope of suitable length which has at one end a weight to serve as a projectile to facilitate throwing the cord or rope to a person at any part of the burning building, after which the fire-escape or other device necessary for the purpose may be conveniently elevated to the window or other portion of the building where most needed for the rescue of person or property" (lines 14-22). It is adapted to assist firemen.

Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus.

Description: Patent for a fire-extinguishing apparatus designed for use in gin-mills, saw-mills, factories, and other buildings. The operator can quickly turn on a stream of water and extinguish the flames. The apparatus is a valved supply-pipe connected to a boiler, branch pipes extend from the supply-pipe, and discharge nozzles are connected and are flexible.

[Horsedrawn Fire Engine]

Description: Photograph of three men behind the reigns of a horse-drawn buggy with a water engine at the rear, and a young boy in overalls standing nearby. John Clark sits on the left, notable for his figure immortalized on the Firemen's Monument in Fair Park. At the center is Dutch Herman, a civilian, and on the right is Al Kaufman. The boy in overalls is known as W. J. "Bill" Cox.

[Temporary Texas Capitol Building Fire]
