York and Abilene.
Concerts are being arranged
through Rotary Clubs in the six
European capitals and band
members will stay in the homes
of Rotarians.
Ed Stewart Abilene business-
man is chairman of the local Ro-
tary Club's project committee.
Stewart said the McMurry Band
was chosen for the trip "because
no one has contributed more to
the children of this town than
Raymond Bynum."
Purpose of the trip according
to Stewart is to imorove inter
national understanding and good
win.
Since 1946 the band under
Bynum's direction has traveled
thousands of miles throughout
the Southwest and in Mexico
playing for churches schools and
civic groups.
Keynote of the band's popular-
ity is its versatility. The McMurry
Band is noted for its abilitv to
play anything from a complete
worship service to novelty num-
bers to "longhair music" to jazz.
Specialty numbers add variety
to band concerts. The band
chorus sings a number of Fred
Waring choral arrangements.
Vocal soloists are Dorothy King
and James Pollard. In addition
to many instrumental solos are
featured the marimba the vibra-
harp and even a calliope.
Choice of the 40 members who
will make the trip will be on the
basis of service tenure and
ability Bynum said.
Downtown Bonks
Give McM $2000
Santa Claus in the person of
the Farmers and Merchants Bank
and the Citizens National Bank
dropped a $2000.00 check in the
McMurry stocking over the
Christmas holidays.
Abilene Christian College and
Hardin-Simmons University also
received checks of the same
amount. The banks also mailed
checks to these same colleges last
year.
The $2000.00 will go into the
general operating fund of the
schools as there were no strings
attached to the presentation of
the gift.
Dr. Harld G. Cooke President
'of McMurry College said "Mc-
Murry College is the recipient of
many fine gifts but none of
which are more appreciated than
those from the Citizens National
and the Farmers and Merchants
banks in Abilene neither are
there any that have wider in-
fluence on the liberality of other
people."
"Through the years these
banks have helped the college
both directly and indirectly in
financial affairs and their aid
will always be remembered"
concluded Dr. Cooke.
