As the new year begins the Mc-
Murry Indian cagers are ncaring
the midway point of the basket-
ball season To date the Indians
boast of only one win and seven
losses This record is not near as
bad as it appears to be The In-
dians have played some top notch
teams this season Such cage pow-
ers as Centenary Hamlinc South-
west Texas State Texas Wes-
lcyan and Texas Western have
been played by the Tribe so far
this season Several of the de-
feats have been by close scores
and on the recent four-game road
trip the Indians were handicap-
ped by injuries and illness Not
-l much faith can be put into pre-
conf erencc records as teams
schedule high class opposition in
order to better prepare the team
for conference play.
3 WINS
The Texas Conference has won
only three basketball games out
of 27 against outside opposition
Eastern New Mexico shows a rec-
ord of two wins and nine losses
while defending champion How-
ard Payne is winlcss in eight
games The Yellow Jackets have
possibly met the strongest oppo-
sition playing the Oklahoma Ag-
gies usually one of the nation's
stronger teams Texas Tech Har-din-Simmons
East Texas State
and others

REDMEN LOSE 4
ON ROAD TRIP
Disaster struck the McMurry
Indian cagers four times last week
on a road trip through Louisiana
and South Texas The injury
riddled Indians were felled by the
Centenary Gcnlcmcn 91-66 and
the Hamlinc Pied Pipers 67-36 in
the first annual Louisiana Invi-
tational Tournament at Shrcve-
port From there the Tribe travel-
ed to San Marcos where they met
defeat in both games of a two
game series with the Southwest
Texas State Bobcats The strong
Bobcats won the first game 95-61
and second game 83-53
The Indians downfall seemed to
be their second half perfor-
mance Only against Hamhne
were the Indians ever trailing by
more than ten points at the half
and on two occasions were as
close as four points to their op-
ponents Coach Edgar Payne's cagers
were handicapped by injuries
and illness Center Bob Harris
was hampered by a siege of flu
and Boyd Sylestinc was injured
in a practice session before the
Southwest Texas State series and
saw no action at all against the
Bobcats Sylestine received an
eye cut that required ten stitches
Jerry English led the McMurry
scoring with 53 points in the four
games Fred Shelton hit for 45
points followed by Jim Jowell 34
Don Taylor 31 and Bob Harris
26
The next games for the Indians
will be at Brownwood Saturday
night when they meet the How-
ard Payne Yellow Jackets in a
Texas Conference game Tuesday
night the Indians play host to
the Abilene Christian Wildcats in
a non-conference game
