THE YELLOW JACKET
February 9 1949
Speaking of Sports
BY 15. G. JOYNKR
"Throw that right! Keep your left
in his face! No No! Don't drop your
guard "
Those three lines multiplied by
some 5000 voices will give you an
idea as to what happened in List week's
Golden Gloves Tournament.
I firmly believe this year's crowd
was the most blood-thirsty group yet to
witness the annual event. Perhaps it
was beciusc I sat with my face prac-
ticallv in the ring each night and
could sec how hard those blows were
and how much they hurt a man. Per-
haps I'm just a weakling. At any
rate I still think a fight can be clean
and hae enough action in it at the
same time.
Take for example the David Paul-
e John Martin bout. Although they
both go to I loward Payne and are good
friends there was no holding back
from either side. They fought one of
the best and hardest tdts of the en-
tire tourney. (By the way John just
how mui'h dynamite does Dae carry
n t'nt light?)
Nest we come to the controersial
final between Wayne Phelan and Hud
I larrell from the San Saba district
from the pneumonia hole called the
'Press Bench' I didn't see am thing to
quarrel about. I'll admit there wasn't
too much slugging the first two rounds
(probably one of the reasons the crowd
booed so loudly) but the third round
was fast enough. Phelan plainly out
boxed 1 larrell the first two rounds and
I believe he outslugged him the third.
One o1" those humorous incidents oc
currcd in this same fight which only
those at ring-side could see. It hap
pened in the second round when the
referee called the two lxys together
and told them in no uncertain terms to
'mix it up'.
Waviu tust nodded but Bud stood
in the center of the ring with his eves
and mouth open wide in a hurt ex-
pression that said more plainly than
any spoken words "How can I mix
it up rel when I can't ecn yet near
lumr" It was amusing because V.ine
had been dancing in luting 1 larrell
and either clinching or prancing back
out of reach before Bud could land a
blow.
One of the surprises of the final
night at least to me was the ease with
which Pay I Iolder polished of I I ind
ley Palmer for the novice welterweight
crown. Palmer a llrownwooel lad
had heavy hitting power in both arms.
He demonstrated this with a second
round TKO on the lirst night and a
KO in the first round of the semi
finals.
However Hay also scored a knock
out in his first fight against Darrell
Studdard another Drownwood pugilist.
At any rate I Iolder was in danger once
during his bout with Palmer. After he
tabbed lus wav out ot that it was
comparatively easy sailing. Niic go
ing Ray.
In the only heavy weight tilt card
ed Donald Jay dccisioncd George Dav
who fought under the Stephcmillc col
ors. Donald easily won the lirst
round and probably could have polish
cd Day off then and there. Since
George was the more experienced box-
er it was natural and correct for Dun
to be a little cautious.
Most of the judges gave Day the
second round but Donald threw enough
telling punches in the third to take
the match.
Hats off also to the other Jackets
who fought good clean fights Robin
Guess Don Ankrum 'Plop' Pambrough
and Jerry Hamrick who was in I low
ard Payne last semester.
That leaves the Lone Star confer-
ence with Southwest Texas State the
champion this year Stephen 1 Aus-
tin State East Texas State and Sam
Houston State.
One interesting item on the way is
the Brownwood Lion- I-ootball Ban
ijuet to be held at the roof garden of
the Brownwood Hotel Teh 7.
A gala program has been planned
with McAdoo Keaton line coach of the
SMU Mustangs as guest speaker and
with pictures to be shown of the
SMll 'lexas and the Cotton Bowl tilts.
Unless circumstances conflict Doak
Walker and Kyle Ri.te will accom-
pany K'Mton. J. D. King Brownwood
High School superintendent will act
as toastin.ister.

even fight with Ankrum showing some
gexid boxing and Guess axhibiting pow
er. Incidentally Ankrum was the only
fighter in the tournament that watch-
ed the feet of his opponent to deter
mine his next attack. This method is
used very ellectively hy many lug time
fighters.
An outstanding performance was
given by Ray Holder. In n cool
methodical manner he punched his
way to the novice welterweight cham-
pionship. In his first bout Holder
was pitted against Studdard of Brown-
wood. It was a vicious attack that
could go either way. Holder demon-
strated the necessary skill and just be-
fore the bell sounded ending the sec-
ond he landed a solid left in Stuel-
dard's midsection that folded him up.
'The count had begun when the bell
snuneicd. studdard tailed to answer
the bell for the third round which gave
I Iolder a knockout In an even two
rounds.
Victory over Studdard placed I Iol-
der into the finals with Lindly Palmer
a tough opponent who had previously
beaten two good boys in the first two
nights. With the same calculated
ciKilness he held the bare edge over
Palmer all the way throwing powerful
rights into the lxidy and head.
Our local "tough boy" Wayne
Phelan found himself in a desperate
struggle with San Saba's pride and
joy a fine veteran named 'Tom Allen
Sloan. 'The fight was indeed a thriller
all the way. A good left jab pulled
Phelan out of many close spots and
helped rack up the necessary points to
decision the fight.
'This was in the middleweight class
anil was a nigiiiignt ot tue lirst nignt.
Phel.in's troubles were not over. San
Saba turned its Bud I larrell loose for
six minutes of hard fast punching.
The most decisive thing in Phel.in's
favor was that same left jab that kept
connecting to the face of I larrell. The
judges awarded Phelan a unanimous
decision and the Regional middle-
weight crown of the open class.
One of the most promising young
boxers is David Pauley. In his first
year of Golden Gloves competition he
won a unanimous decision over Wayne
Palmer as he completely out classed
him in six minutes of classy boxing.
He combined speed power and con
ditioning to edge past his classmate
John Scott Martin for possession of the
novice light heavyweight crown. The
two gave the crowd one of the tour-
nament's most thrilling bouts. The
fight was closo both being very ag-
ressive. It was anybody's fight. The
crowd was quite in waiting for the
judges decision. As the decision was
announced the house sounded approval
for the choice of a winner of a good
fight.
Martin had stopped Ivan Reynolds
in short order in a preliminary bout in
the second fight. The first round was
hardly half gone when the referee was
convinced that Reynolds was out-
classed. In that short space of time
it seemed that Martin hit him with
everything but the ring post and
probably Reynolds thought he had
used that. 'The light was stopped in
the first round giving Martin a techni-
cal KO over Reynolds.
I loward Payne's entry in the open
heavy-weight class was a good Jacket
Donald Jay. lie stepped out of his
class to take honors from Daniel
Baker's hopeful George Day. Jay had
never boxed in Golden Gloves compe-
tition thus he held a novice classifi-
cation hut chose to contest Day rather"
than let him go to victory unchalleng-
ed. Jay gave a good account of him-
self as a beginner. Day has fought
previously in the Brownwood tourna-
ment. 'The easiest total victory of the tour-
nament went to the Jacket's freshman
football player Aureliano Ortez. He
became champion of the novice heavy-
weight division without a contest. No
other name was entered in this class.
'The winners in the open class will
represent Brownwood in the State
Golden Gloves tournament at Fort
Worth. 'Those from Howard Payne
eligible to make the trip are Wayne
Phelan and Donald Jay.

JACKETS DESTROY
INDIANS WINNING
STREAK 53-46
A near capacity crowd gathered at
the McMurry college gym Thursday
night to see the Jackets break m In
di.in five game home winning streak
with a 5V46 trouncing of the Abilene
cagers.
Strangely enough the last game
plajcd between these two Texas con-
ference teams was won by an iden-
tical score but with McMurry the win-
ner. That was the second game in
1948.
The Jackets surged iihead in the
first five minutes ot play with an 8-1
lead and were never in serious trou-
ble dropping behind only two or three
times during the game.
Captain Glenn Whitis and Herman
Moore shared scoring honors with 15
points each. Don Lloyd ol McMurry
trailed with 14.
