Playing flu role nf Santa Clause

Thoughts whirling hack lo the
IIPC-SWTSC same last year in
San .Marcos still cause grimaces
on the faces fo coaches and ath-
letes in the III'C circle. After Ret-
ting off to a slow start the Jack-
els nulled to within one point of
the Hohcats 11-13 and staged a
long drive from deep in their own
territory to the 'Cat in. hut the
lime element proved to hold the
lop cards as only six seconds re-
mained on the clock.
It was a tough choice to decide
what should he done on the final
play hut the final decision was
to try a field goal. The placement
was unsuccessful and quarterback
David Walls who was to have at-
tempted to field goal was forced
lo run and was swarmed under on
the SWTSC nine to end the game.
When students fail their first
examination in the fall they ex-
pect another chance and rightly
so. Such is the ease with the
Yellow Jackets except they didn't
because the game with MeMurry
was graded on a curve and the
Jackets simply ran second to a
better opponent.
With this in mind we expect to
see an e-ual number of fans mak-
ing just as much noise for real
rock-ribbed support for the Yel-
low Jackets Saturday night.
Another reason to be out for
tlie game Saturday night is that
the Jackets will not make another
home appearance until Oct. 25
when they meet Lamar Tech Car-
dinals here at 2 in the afternoon
in the Homecoming Day game. In
between the two games Howard
l'ayne will meet East Texas State jw)l01.c

in Commerce on October I journey
to Nacogdoches for a round with
Stephen F. Austin on October 11
and will have an open date Oct. IS.
Howard Payne's Yellow Jackets
made an unseccessful hid for an
opening game win here Saturday
night as they fell to powerful Me
Murry 21-S in a non-conference
ime played before 101)1) fans at
lion Stadium.
The Jackets couldn't seem to
find tlie combination for doing
anything right in the first half
mil McMurry's 11-0 half-time lead
was the result of outright Howard
Payne gifts. The third Savage-
marker was of the earned variety
as Tommy MeAdams passed to
fullback Ernie Davis for 0.'! yards
and paydirt for a 21-0 lead 4:15
deep in the third period.
Taking advantage of Jacket mis-
cues Jimmy Baldwin intercepted
an IIPC aerial on tiin Jackets'
third offensive try of the evening
lie 'snared the pass on the Payne
31. and hustled to the 20 before
he was spilled. Davis carried three
of tile next four plays" and crash
ed over from four yards out for
Hie score. Tommy MeAdams boot
ed the extra point to give the visi
tors a 7-0 lead with tlie clock
showing 4:15 time elapsed in tlie
first period.
Hut this wasn't the worst part.
Even worse nightmares followed
as two successive bad snails' from
center cost the Paynemon fi5
yards possession of the ball and
six points. Facing third down on
the MeMurry If the first miscuo
left the Jackets in possession on
their own 33 nnd the next circus
toss sailed to the Payne one-yard
sripe where Gene Hargrove re-
covered. Hobby Hargraves scooted
inlo the end zone for six more
points on the next play. This time
Don Howard converted for a 11-0
lead with 1:40 remaining in tlie
lirst quarter.
The Jackets failed la lake nil-
antugc of their recoery of two
.MeMurry fumble and Kill yards
in penalties stepped off against
tlie ltediaen. and scored their
only touchdown in the fading
moments of play.
One Johnny liullock sparked the
drive as he took a MeMurry punt
on his own 111 and speeded down
tlie sidelines to tlie Indian 44
his !!7-yard return was
right cud In sail Into the end
one landing up for the two-
point bonus.
Hudson led HI'C's pass receiv-
ing column against MeMurry snar-
ing four aerials for 7!) yards.
Short and to the point Coacli
Williams said "too many mistakes
early in game and not taking ad-
vantage of their mistakes cost us
the ballgame."
Despite I heir generally-regarded
poor showing tlie Jackets put up
a stiff defense which weakened
noticeably only on the 03-yard
pass play.
Howard Payne mentors prnised
quarterback Dale Ilyerly and half
back John Iiaskin for their of-
fensive endeavors nd sent offen
sive plaudits also to end Alfred
Ilolcomh.
Defensive congratulations were
sent to Jerry Miller Ilarvoy Neal
and Rodney Hudson who also
shined offensively.

Howard Payne's grid "exports"
drew their shrouds of mystery
even closer around their gnarled
bodies after last week's guessing
goofs but point out that upsets
a e e o u n t e d for many of the
victories recorded last weekend.
A setting of cosmic dust on their
crystal hall is blamed for several
of the predictions missed and tho
prognosticators found out after
presstimo that the tea leaves they
had consulted had been grown on a
Texas A&M farm so that accounts
for the miss on Texas Tech over
the Aggies.
Hesides their usual crystal hall
gazing and tea-leaf consultations
the grid professors have plotted
star courses and even jimmied an

Like last year the Hohcats will

with a 1-1 record. The 'Cats were
beaten by MeNeese State in their

torrential rains. Howard Payne
will enter the battle with tn 0-1
