Presents Honor For Americanism
Monday afternoon. Dr. Guy D. Newman Howard Payne president
received for the collouo one of tlie nation's high honors an award
for a program on the American Way of Life.
It was the principal award in the Thomas Jefferson category of
college campus programs in Americanism given each year by the
Freedoms Foundation at Yallcv Forge. The award was an encased
George Washington Medal and' $1000.
It was awarded to Howard Pavne for its fourth annual Democracy-in-Action
program held dining the 1957-58 school year a program
evolving from a dream of Dr. Newman himself of study and training
bv the college's faculty and students in the American ideals as based
on Christian principles.

Expected At H.P.C.
Some nn prospective students are
scheduled to begin arriving on
campus this afternoon. Guests of
the school for the weekend tho
students will he escorted around
the campus by members of the
Student Senate and will talk with
division heads in regard to tho
fields in which they are most in-
terested. Martha St. Clair who is in
charge of the Guest Weekend has
been ill and her secretary Cecllo
Iilunt is working on plans for tho
two days of events designed to
acrjuaint senior high school stu-
dents with the college.
According to Miss Hlunt the
.Junior Varsity program previously
scheduled for tonight will bo re-
placed by an all-school party
sponsored by tho Junior class and
the guests are invited to attend
festivities.
The thirty visitors will stay in
Veda llodge and Taylor Halls and
are encouraged to attend church
Sunday morning before returning
home. She added that a list of
Hrownwood churches will he post-
ed on bulletin boards.

the Southwestern Baptist Theo-
logical Seminary is to aid in train-
ing Baptist workers in counseling

for campus offices are as follows-
Student government president
vice-president secretary and treas-
urer will be elected March 11.
Campaign speeches for these of-
fices will be made March 4. Peti-

Class offices will be elected
March 11. Petitions require signa-
tures of 10 per cent of each
respective claws. This includes
president vice-president student
government representatives secre-
taries treasurers and reporters.
TISA Correspondent will ho
elected on March 1. The office re-
quires a petition of 50 names.
Petitions for yell leaders re-
quire ."in names-. Try-outs will bo
held March 11 in chapel. Election
of the six WCO-Gl yell leaders will
be the following Friday March IS.

One of the featured attractions
of Democracy-in-Action week this
April will he a chapel address by
Dr. Kenneth Wells' president of
Freedoms Foundation at Valley
Forge which has just given tho
annual program an award.
Other specialties of tho week this
spring include an address by
George Mardikian owner of Omar
Khayyam's restuarants in Califor-
nia; two concerts by the Tinted
States Navy Rand and a talk by
Cartha DoLoaeh assistant director
of the Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation and national vice command-
er of tho American Legion.
The week which has developed
from a one-day seminar in T.TiC. is
designed to focus attention on tin
obligations of Mr. Average Citizen
to his country in understanding
democracy and being able to ex-
plain it to others.
Also scheduled for the week's
slate of visitors are Miss Helen
I'oe world traveler and lecturer ;
John Conlan young business man;
the Rev. I.. Gerald Fielder South-
ern Baptist missionary to Japan;

There is in existance on the
Howard Payne campus a human
organism silently and persistants
at work an organism that for the
past year and a half lias been
feeding and growing upon a
threatened idea.
Known as the Student Committee
for I)oinocracy-ln-Action it never-
theless remains largely unknown
to the students in its purpose phi-
losophy and effectiveness.
Not long ago the Conunitteo
adopted an expansion program

the ceremonies to see Dr. Newman
receive the award were Mrs.

formation. The ceremonies in which awards
were gicn in a number of signifi-
cant ureas of Americanism pro-
motion were held on the 22Sth
anniversary of George Washing-
ton's birthday. They took place at
the Valley Forge Military Academy
which adjoins the historical bat-
tlefield where :!.nni men in Wash-
ington's command died of starva
tion and cohl during the fateful
winter of 1777. when the Revolu
tionary army was stationed at Val
ley Forge to protect Philadelphia
social and cultural center of tho
13 colonies.
Snow lay on the battlefield as
the guests arrived Monday morn-
ing just as it did during that
winter.
