Third year in a
Lions trip up Jackets
in LSC Tournament semis
By Mede Nix
Yellow Jacket Editor
A determined comeback ef-
fort by Howard Payne in the
final 19 seconds fell just short
59-55 as East Texas State
knocked the Jackets out of the
Lone Star Conference Tour-
nament for the third year in a
row.
The Lions were aided by a
questionable charging call a
missed 10-foot jump shot and a
poor toss on a jump ball all
within the final 10 seconds after
ET took a 57-56 lead on a three-
point play by 6-11 center Lee
Johnson.
The Jackets fighting to stay
in the running throughout took
its first lead of the game at 52-50
with 3:36 left on a Gary Hopkins
layup. Marshall Davis then
stole the ball and laid it in with
3: 18 left to give HP a 54-50 lead.
Both coaches were upset with
the officials. ET coach Jim
Gudger was none to pleased
that all-world candidate Lee
Johnson sat on the bench for 10
minutes in the first half and
eight minutes in the second half
because of foul trouble. He
thought Johnson was being
defensed too heavily by the
Academy building
burglarized Feb. 15
A very unusual robbery oc-
curred at the Douglas MacAr-
thur Academy of Freedom on
the night of February 14 or the
morning of February 15 ac-
cording to University officials.
The front glass doors
the second set from the right on
the north end of the building
had been opened.
The missing items are two
swords from the coats of armor
in the entrance way to the
Magna Carta Room as well as
two battle axes one small ax
and one French sword. In In-
dependence Hall four inkwells
and two brass eandleholders
were discovered missing.
A small vacuum cleaner was
taken from Constitution Hall
and the top part of the sign in
the back hallway on the first
floor was taken.
The sign reads Please see
receptionist at front desk."
Other things out of place in-
cluded the side doors in the
back hallway east end which
had been knocked loose; the
back door of Col. Russel 0.
row
Jackets who had two to three
men on the center most of the
time.
HP had three final chances
however after Johnson's three-
pointer with 19 seconds left.
Hopkins took the ball down
and worked it to within ten feet
of the basket where he went in-
to the air and was called for a
charging foul after ET's Mike
Williams moved under him.
However Hopkins stole the
inbounds pass got the ball to
Greg Bonner who shot from
just to left of the free-throw line
and missed. Bonner tied up Lion
Billy Roberson on the rebound
with three seconds left.
Coach Bob Derryberry called
the toss on the jump ball by the
referee a "bad pitch" and
Roberson a six-footer won the
tip from the 6-4 Bonner. Tim
Goski was fouled by Marshall
Davis after he covered the ball
and hit two free throws to give
ET the final 59-56 margin.
Derryberry said that the of-
ficial threw the ball "10 feet
sideways instead of up." The
ball definitely was not thrown
straight.
The final seconds do not tell
the complete story of the game.
Fudge's office was unlocked
but the chain lock was still
hooked; a framed "Magna Car-
ta" was found laying on the
floor of Constitution Hall; and a
piece of plastic that had been
rolled up next to a Pacific map
board was draped over a
classroom chair.
Also in Magna Carta Hall
two round pieces of brass were
found one on the floor and one
on a table. These brass pieces
were from the battle axes and
are approximately one-half in-
ch in diameter.
In what is believed to be an
unrelated incident two medals
were taken on or about Feb. 8
from Col Fudge's office. One
medal had Dr. Othal E. Brand's
name on it and Mrs. Dallas
Sherman's name was on the
other. It is now known how long
these had been gone before they
were discovered missing.
Anyone who knows the
whereabouts of any of these ar-
ticles is advised to contact the
Brownwood Police Department.
The Jackets hurt themselves by
hitting on only 21 to 51 field goal
attempts for 40 percent while
ET hit 25 of 47 for 53 percent.
The Jackets' figures were also
hurt by several missed layups
and East Texas got several
easy layups by Jeff Granger off
fastbreaks which was
something the Lions had not
been able to do when they lost
last Wednesday night 57-49 in
Brownwood.
The layups by the Lions gave
them an eight-point lead mid-
way in the second half but the
Jackets closed that gap to one
at the half 36-35.
Gary Hopkins led HP with 15
Bonner had 14 and Darrell Dod-
ds 11. Jeff Granger had 22 for
ET. with Gerald Batty adding
16 and Johnson 11.
It was the final game for
seniors Darrell Dodds Pete
Patterson and Rennie Waldrop.
The small band of Jacket fans
in the 1850 persons attending
the game were stunned and
disappointed to lose to the Lions
in the LSC tournament for the
third year in a row but they are
hoping the fourth time will be a
charm and the losses
revenged next year.
