The Senate finished its second
day of private deliberations Wednes-
day on the trial of William Jefferson
Clinton the 42nd president.
Senate Majority Leader Trent
Lott is pushing for the final vote to
be taken Thursday by 5 p.m. eastern
time.
According to Wednesday's is-
sue of USA Today Lott is eager for
the proceedings to end.
"If we still have speeches and
if we can't do it (take the vote Thurs-
day then we will certainly go over
to Friday but I think wc need to be-
gin to talk about that goal" Lott said.
Clinton has been impeached on
charges of perjury and obstruction of
justice in his efforts to conceal his
affair with former White House In-
tern Monica Lewinsky.

Deaton continued to talk
about his idea with Dr. Gary
Gramling professor of Christian
studies and Brad Johnson associ-
ate dean of students about his idea.
"I am very excited about "The
Foundation" being a part of univer-
sity life and it can be used by our
faculty and staff as well. It shows
servant leadership by these students
to start 'The Foundation'" said
Johnson. Deaton wanted a publi-
cation that would allow students to
write devotional material and sub-
mit it.
Dr. Gramling also encouraged
Deaton to make the devotional
available for professors to submit
their material. Each week students
and faculty may submit their mate-
rial to "The Foundation" to be pub-
lished. The author of each work
remains anonymous.
Deaton does not work on the
publication alone but has several
other friends who help out in the
process. Eric Tipton a freshman

For the Senate to actually
convict and remove Clinton from
office it would take a two-thirds
vote requiring more than a Repub-
lican majority. Currently in the Sen-
ate there are 55 Republicans and
45 Democrats.
Several Howard Payne Uni-
versity students do not think Clinton
will be removed.
"The Senate is too divided
along party lines" said Shawn
Gafford freshman political science
major. "The Senate will not com-
municate in a bipartisan manner to
settle this matter."
Though Gafford says he
doesn't know enough of the facts
to judge if it were up to him he
would remove Clinton from office.
"Perjury is a high crime"
Gafford said. "The President should
not lie to the country."
