THE CORRAL, ABILENE, TEXAS
work, set forth the cause for which he is working, and make an
appeal to his fellow-men. It was done in a masterly manner; he
spoke simply, clearly, forcefully, and he reached the hearts of
those who heard him. I knew this man in his college days and
I recall the earnestness with which he took hold of society
work. He probably gave as much time to that work as to any
one study in his course. He spoke extemporaneously, he debated,
he wrote orations, he submitted to merciless criticism at the
hands of his fellow members, and he deemedl it worth while
to do his best in whatever he puts his hand to. He would as
soon have thought of failing in a daily recitation as to fail to
come up with his part on the program of his society meeting. He
also considered it worth while to take some training in the man-
agement of his voice, and in vocal exl)ression; and when he ahd
to take up his life work he was ready to do the best in it.
I heard a young man say not long ago, "I am going to get all
out of this Society there is in it to get." Oh, but you will get
out of it in proportion as you put into it. Put into it your best
work, your honest, earnest endeavor; and you will get out of it
what will always be yours, whatever your calling in life: the
power to face your fellow man and tell him what you think, the
power, it may be, to win him to what you think is right.
