published by the leading American cartographic firms. The Garrett
volumes complement the material acquired from Hudson and include
long runs of atlases, such as those published by George F. Cram from
1884-1952, C. S. Hammond and Company from 1915-1978, Funk
and Wagnalls' in the 192os and 1930s, and Rand McNally in both the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Mrs. Garrett's collection includes a
number of landmark works and rarities. Among them is the Statistical
Atlas of the United States Based on the Results of the Ninth Census, 1870....
This atlas was prepared under the direction of Francis A. Walker, the
superintendent of the census, and is considered to be the first to incor-
porate thematic information in an American production. The jewel of
Mrs. Garrett's collection is the 1671 atlas of John Ogilby entitled Amer-
ica: Being the Latest and Most Accurate Descrzption of the New World. Pub-
lished in London as the English translation of the first encyclopedia of
the Americas, the work is bound in leather and beautifully illustrated.
The atlases from Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Garrett have been added to
the holdings of the Cartographic History Library, a component of the
Special Collections Division located on the sixth floor of the UTA Cen-
tral Library. The library's U.S.-produced atlas collection is now one of
the most extensive in the country outside of the Library of Congress.

director-archivist. "The scope of the family historical information in
the collection is phenomenal, and it greatly enriches our available
research materials on Southeast Texas family history. Over 150,000
names are contained in the collection which consists of over 25,000
items. Due to its scope and extensive documentation, the collection has
received national attention in recent years and was microfilmed by the
Utah Genealogical Society."
Curtis Jacobs had a lifelong love of history and decided to investigate
his family's history after his retirement in 1964 from the Louisiana
State Department of Education. Curtis and his wife Gladys, who con-
