Southwestern Collection
sents years of systematic research in archives and courthouses through-
out the United States. As the research progressed, the Jacobs expanded
their efforts to include nonfamily members, which eventually included
virtually everybody who was buried in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana,
who was born before 188o. This parish was an early gateway for Texas
migration and the home of many prominent early settlers of southeast
Texas and southwest Louisiana.
Dating from 1534, the information collected on the various surnames
included birth and death, marriage, military service, land ownership,
and other general information compiled from numerous sources in-
cluding the U.S. Census, state and local government records, family
bibles, newspapers, cemetery records, and family archives. The entries
on family group sheets are accompanied by copies of the original docu-
ments to provide researchers with the sources of the information. The
group sheets, numbering over 8,ooo, contain family history for over
350 surnames with the prominent families being Brewster, Eves,
Etheredge, Hennegan, Jacobs and Meadows. Other prominent south-
east Texas surnames included in the collection are Bean, Cochran, Col-
lins, Cryer, Dunham, Goins, Harmon, Hyatt, Jackson, McFarland, Ma-
haffey, Nolen, Parker, Reeves, Sterling, Swilley, West, Wingate, Woods,
and Zachary.
A preliminary guide has been prepared and researchers who are in-
terested in the collection should contact the Sam Houston Center.
Query letters are welcomed. The center, a part of the Local Records
Division of the Texas State Library, is located three miles north of Lib-
erty on FM lol 1, off of State Highway 146. It is open Monday through

The Special Collections and Archives Department of Corpus Christi
State University Library has acquired the papers of Walter Elmer Pope
(1879-1944), longtime state legislator, attorney, businessman, and
civic leader from Corpus Christi. The papers were donated by Judge
Jack Pope of Austin, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of
Texas and W. E. Pope's nephew. The former Chief Justice received his
start as a young attorney with his uncle in the late 1930s. Judge Pope
preserved the papers for over forty-five years before placing them at
CCSU where they will be available to researchers. CCSU Special Collec-
tions and Archives Department personnel are presently conducting
oral history interviews with Dr. Hector P. Garcia, founder and guiding
spirit of the American G.I. Forum. Thus far, the interviews concentrate
on Garcia's formative years.409
