Sleep is a mystery.
Some one said that man spends
one third of his life time asleep and
yet fears to die.
But the mystery of sL-cp is its
perverseness Shake;\>eare has a care
worn king declaim that slumber
comes to the lad atop th; giddy
o«ast when to nod even a moment
may mean death but avo;ds the
couches of monferchs.
Shakespeare by no means ex-
hausted the possibilities. For ex-
ample—why is it that I can sit
in an uncushioned chair in the
leading room of a public library
^nd drop into a dose, or can after
rhe coM boiled ham and insipid ap-
ple pie of a Lions Club luncheon1
find my head grow heavy and
suddenly "come to" with the real-
ization that I have If-en snooz,inS
while the speaker of the day was
saving the world—and yet let me
* lie down at night on a bed in a
hotel room for which I am paying
$4 and I have had a hearty dinner
if the man in the next room is
talking over the phone and h;s
voice comes dimly through a wall,
it keeps me awake?
I can sit bolt Upright ill a
Pullman car seat—which is an un-
yielding as a law of the Medcv
and1 Persians—and in broad day
light I can slumber. But when
the porter has made down the
berth and I am arrayed in paja-
mas and all is dark, lo, sleep is
far away.
But if I am driving at niShr, 1
may become so drowsy that 1 have
to thrust my head out the window
in the cool air, stop at a roadside
cafe and drink a cup of black cof-
fee but still have to fight against
falling to sleep at the wheel, and
So give up and stop at a hotel
and then become wide awake until
almost dawn
Why can't 1 go to sleep? Hut
don't try to tell me, probably I
would be asleep before the expla-
nation was half finished.

Format's ^ SAFZTY RULE.
Even Mary's Iamb can learn that easy safety rule! Best rule of all—for school cKildren
and everyone else—is: Don't walk on the highway. But if you must, then walk Co the
left, facing oncoming care. .Your chances of avoiding accident are three times better
you observe this rule.
Use special care at night and when roads are slippery. Even at moderate drTviltgg
speeds, motorists often can't sec pedestrians in time to stop. At 40 miles an hour* a
stopping distance may be as much as 164 feet—much more at higher speeds.
