Coach J. H. (Cap) Shelton,
who has guided Howard Payne
College cinder forces since 1919,
was paid special recognition
Thursday as HPC's new track,
which bears his name, was of-
ficially dedicated.
Brownwood Mayor W. L.
(Lee) Lamkin proclaimed Thurs
day to be "Cap Shelton Day" in
the city, in view of the fact that
the new facility was to be of-
ficially dedicated, with Howard
Payne, Abilene Christian, North
Texas State and Southwest Tex-
as State to be in competition.
The resolution read:
"Whereas, Coach J. H. (Cap)
Shelton has served Howard
Payne College faithfully since
1919, and
Whereas, his track teams
down through the years have
brought state-wide and national
recognition to his school and to
our city, and
Whereas, the principles and
high ideals of Coach Shelton
are being carried on by men to
every walk of life who have
felt his influence both on the
athletic field and in the class-
room, and
Whereas, the construction of
the first cinder track in the im-
mediate Central Texas area
opens a new era in sports for
Brownwood and Brown County,
and
Whereas, members of the
Board of Trustees of Howard
Payne College have decreed that
this track shall proudly bear
the name of Coach Shelton, and
Whereas Thursday at 8 p.m.
will signal the beginning of tine
first track meet ever run on the
new cinder track, and
Whereas this will be the first
time Brownwood and area track
fans have had opportunity to
see Howard Payne and other
track teams in action on the
home front in many, many
years,
Therefore, be it resolved that
Thursday, May 3, be designated'
as "J. H. (Cap) Shelton Day"
in Brownwood, affording him
all the rights, honors and privi-
leges appertaining thereto."

W. L. (Lee) Lamkin
