INVITATIONAL
Howard Payne's surprising
Yellow Jackets used a triple
victory by Wayne Rathke and
great all-around strength to
overcome a fabulous perform-
ance by Trinity's Clyde Glosson
and take the team championship
in the Sixth Annual HPC Invi-
tational Track Meet
The Jackets scored in 14 of
the 16 events to amass 83 points,
far ahead of second place South-
west Texas State, which tallied
64. Other team totals were Sul
Ross 41, Hardtn4Simmons 37,
Trinity 33, McMurry 7, and An-
gelo State 3.
Rathke took high point honors
with 15 points, accumulated on
blue ribbon performances in the
javelin (197-9), shot put (55%),
and discus (141-0). Rathke's
javelin mark was one of five
meet records set during the day,
and his shot put mark set a
school record.
Glosson accounted for two of
the other broken records with a
9.3 100 and a 20.9 220. The other
new marks were set by McMur-
ry's Freddie Fox with a 24-7VH
long jump and by H-SU's Ron
Hawkins, who turned a 14-6 pole
vault.
McMurry's sprint relay record
of 41.1 was tied by Southwest
Texas, and Trinity's Brent
Schumacher established another
mark in the 440-yd. intermedi-
ate hurdles, a new event when
he ran a 54.4.
HPC picked up a fistfull off
points in the distance races as
they took 1-2-3 in the mile and
1-2 in the two-mile. The timings
for the mile were Terry Jessup
4:21.2, Walter Harris 4:24.7, and
Charlie Sprinkle 4:26.3. Jessup«
won the two-mile in 9:52.5 fol-
lowed by Harris in 9:54.0.
Freshman Richard Davis
clocked a 1:53.7 for third in the
880; Bill Cleveland and David
Coughran cleared 6-0 for second
and third, respectively, in the
high jump; George Nelson took
third in the pole vault with a
leap of 13-11, followed by Terry
Goodwin with a 13-6 vault in
fourth; Hollls Kirkpatrick took
second in the discus and fourth
in the shot; James Harris took
fifth in the shot with a heave of
37-10; Bob Brabbin leaped 22-
8^ for fourth in the long jump;
Sprinkle took fourth and David
King fifth in the 880; and Ken
Lawler took fifth in the 440-hur-
dles for other HPC placings.
In the sprints, Charlie John-
son ran a 9.5 in the century but
had to settle for fourth place.
Milton Plagens finished fourth
and Johnson fifth in the swift
220.
The Jacket sprint relay four-
some clocked a season best of
41.9 in finishing third, and the
mile relay unit took fourth to
round out the scoring.

WINfflJfG COACH—Coach David Noble proudly displays the
Howard Payne Invitational Trophy which his Yellow Jackets
won last Saturday. Noble will take his charges to Hobbs, N.M.,
this weekend to take part in a triangular meet with powerful
Eastern New Mexico and McMurry. The win last week was the
first overall championship won by the Jackets this year.

COWBOYS SLIP PAST
HPC IN GOLF MATCH
The Howard Payne College
golfers carried strong Hardin-
Simmons to the 18th hole of the
final match before losing to the
Cowboys 4-3 April 16th at the
Brownwood Country Club.
The Jackets now stands at 4-
4-2 for the season with every
match decided on the last green.
H-SU ran its record to a hefty
14-3 for the year.
Tommy Davis and Paul Aday
of Howard Payne, five down in
Individual and team play after
the first nine holes, rallied on
the back nine to snare two
points, almost pulling the match
out of the fire.
The results:
Paul Aday of HPC and Pat
McGLaughlin of H-SU finished
even; Tommy Davis of HPC over
Mike Malone of H-SU, 1-up;
Aday and Davis finished even
with McGlaughlin and Malone in
team play; Chris Ballard of H-
SU over Lanny Voss of HPC 3-
2; and Harold Preston of H-SU
over Stew McChesney of HPC
3-2; Preston and Ballard over
McChesney and Voss 3-2 in team:
play; and Jim Johnston of HPC
over Ted Morgan of H-SU 2-1.
Davis and McChesney had 76a
for the Jackets, Johnston a 77,
Aday a 79 and Voss an 80. Pres-
ton was medalist with a two-
over 74.
Scrimmage Session e
Ends In Stalemate
After an hour and a half, an
HPC controlled scrimmage ses-
sion ended with only two touch-
downs, one by transfer Danny
Ehle and the other by Chan
Priest, freshman from San Saba.
They played on opposite teams.
After the session, Head Coach
Joe James and two of his aides,
Herman Moore and James Cam-
eron, expressed pleasure over
the desire and the blocking and
tackling.
Although the running was not
bad and the quarterbacks en-
joyed their best day, the coaches
let it be known that they are
still in the need of an experi-
enced signal caller if they are
to be in contention for the Lone
Star Conference football crown.
Much of the backfield speed
was missing from the workout,
as another Jacket coach, David
Noble, had backs James Harris,
Robert Lewis, and Charlie John-
son with him at the HPC track
meet.
Coach James stated that "we
are not satisfied with our quar-
terbacking, although Bill Lam-
bert and Jim Strother are doing
much better — especially when
you realize their lack of expe-
rience.
Coming in for their share of
praise for either their blocking
or tackling ability were Bill In-
gram, Radford Taylor, Jim Far-
rell and Larry Kelm.
