When Dr. Frances Merritt
returned from the University
of Texas in 1956, she had de-
cided to give the campus a
new tradition. The idea came
to her during the annual UT
Honors Day and Swing-out

ceremonies. Together with
then Dean of Women Gladys
Hicks, she organized and pro-
duced the first annual Honors
Day and Chime Out at HPC.
"We didn't know if there
would be a 'second annual' but
we worked hard on the first
presentation, and it went
over," Dr. Merritt remembers.
"I was so impressed by the
program at the University,
that I put the wheels in mo-
tion to start something simi-
lar here."
Chime Out was originally
intended to complete the Hon-
ors Day schedule, and for sev-
eral years, both events were
held in conjunction. The split
came in 1962 or '63, accord-
ing to Dr. Merritt.
"Of course, we couldn't just
copy UT, so we changed the
name of the event from
'Swing-out' to Chime Out,
and replaced the emphasis
from the levity of graduation
to the gravity of responsibili-
ty of graduation. The cere-
mony symbolizes the transfer
of college leadership from the
graduating Senior Class to the
Junior Class, which, when you
stop to think, is something!"
As the instigator of the tra-
dition, she has her impressions
of various people and events
in the past fifteen years.
"A stand-out in my mind
was the third-"Chime Out.
Greg Berry was Senior Class
president. This was 1959, and
his style has not changed a
bit since then. He always did
everything with a flamboy-
ance and flair. He always was
enthusiastic about nearly ev-
erything, except my ed class-
es. Nevertheless, it was a very
good ceremony."
When asked about the fu-
ture of the tradition, she con-
cluded, "Traditions are made
to last. It's such a beautiful
and symbolic one, and I feel
that the students and admin-
istration would have to change
drastically to remove Chime
Out from the list of gradua-
tion events. However, I would
like to see Chime Out again
done in conjunction with Hon-
ors Day. The two fit together
so well. That would be my
only change."
Chime Out will again peal
over the campus "High above
the Bayou's waters, out on
Center's heights," because of
the imagination of one of
HPC's most distinguished
faculty members.
