It has occurred to a number of
observers that the word battle at
the Geneva conference over a Laos
settlement will provoke echoes in
Southeast Asia. Political leaders
in that area are following the
game at the big table with some-
thing more than professional in-
terest. A victory for either side
might well mean readjustments at
home.
We have made concessions on de-
tails rather than essentials. It is
important that we make this very
clear. The least indication that we
are giving ground.on basic issues
will send our stock tumbling down
in most of Asia.
It already is known that pro-
Western Thailand is having misgiv-
ings about its ties with the West.
There has been lalk of developing
a oolicy of unofficial neutralism,
talk that Thailand may reduce its
commitments in the Southeast Asia
Treaty Organization to placate the
communists.

son may reverse this particular
trend, if it is a trend. He came
to Thailand with a pledge of United
States support. He said in an air-
port speech: "We are determined
to maintain adequate and respon-
sible strength in the 'tree world.
We will honor our commitments
and we will stand by our friends."
That officials have asked for
more military assistance to bolster
the country's armed forces. They
reason that Thailand would be the
first on the firing line in the event
of a communist takeover in Laos
and a major flareup. They also
want more economic aid to help
build up ihe country's depressed
areas.
These areas happen to front on
neighboring Laos and there has
been some communist infiltartion.
Observers insist that unless some-
thing is done it only will be a mat-
ter ot' time before communism be-
comes a real daneer. As it is in
Laos and South Viet Nam.

By JOHN BARBOUR
NEW YORK — Uy the year 2,000
and that's only 40 years away —
these may be the medical facts of
life.
On Monday night you'll take a
pill and go to bed. You'll sleep un-
til Wednesday morning. Then
you'll wake up refieshed and be
able to go on non-stop until bedtime
next Monday night.
You'll have almost forgotten
what the common cold is like.
If you are ill, your doctor will
give you a tiny radio and measur-
ing device to tape to your chest.
Then he'll watch you as you go
through a busy week, alert to chan.
ges in your condition.
You'll know from the second
month of pregnancy the sex of your
expected child.
Furthermore, if you're plan-
ning a baby, you may be abl0 to
do something about getting the
sort of child you want.
These are some of the predic-
tions of Dr. Austin Smith, presi-
dent of the Pharmaceutical Manu-
facturers Assn. based on the direc-
tion of today's medical and phar-
maceutical research.
Where Wonder Drugs?
Undreamed of drugK are going
to come from the sea. says Dr.
Smith. Still others will come from
the screening of herbs, barks and
waters used bv African witch doc-
tors. Man will investigate every
possible healing balm the earth has
to olYer.
Even electronics will play a big
part in everyday medicine of the
future.
The heart disease victim, for in-
stance. will work, sleep, play with
a silent radio guardian — a small
black box. perhps. taped to his
chest.
It will read his heart activity, Im-
pulse. perhaps his blood pressure,
reporting bv radio to the doctor's
office. There a computing center
will keep constant watch.
When warning sitms show, tin-
doctor is notified. Then he can

send a return signal through his
radio station, an impulse that will
nigger the release of a measured
prescription dose of a drug into
me bloodstream of the heart pa-
tient, averting a possible stroke
or heart attack.
Already a device that can moni-
tor Ihe heartbeat of a patient and
broadcast reports lias been announ-
ced.
Conquer Cancer
By the year 2,000, today's fear-
some medical enemies — cancer,
unexciting as diphtheria, typhoid
polio, heart disease — will be as
fever and smallpox are now. Dr.
Smith predicts.
Surgery and mechanics will team
up 'tor still greater wonders.
If your lungs or your heart are
badly damaged, perhaps in an acci.
dent, doctors may be able to save
your life with artificial organs fitt-
ed into your body.
Severe pain will be a thing of
the past, as new drugs are develop-
ed to combat pain — and hence re-
duce much of the anxiety that com-
es with disease.
Buck's A Dud
To keep medical and drug wea-
pons up to date, 39 years from now
pharmaceutical firms will have ele-
ctronic computers continually di-
gesting new data on the changing
characteristics of viruses that prey
on man. This system can then sig-
nal changes that can he made in
stores of medicines all over the
nation.
Isn't all of this putting Dr. Smith
out on a limb?
No.
