and Dowell crossed the final goal far in advance of everyone else, while the Port Arthur
rooters went temporarily insane with delight.
Yes, Port Arthur far outclassed the other towns in physical endurance, and also in
the ability to hold its temper under the most maddening of circumstances. If its athletes
starred in the physical realm, even so did their coach, L. L. Knight, star in the realm
of the spiritual. The Beaumont coach and his confederates were exasperating to the
last degree, but they were dealt with in a calm, though none the less effectual, way.
The return trip was begun about 7 p. m. Supper was eaten on the boats, after
which numerous devices were resorted to for the purpose of keeping awake. Nevertheless
the moon shone on more than one person stretched out on a string of life preservers, vainly
endeavoring to imagine himself comfortable. The dock was reached at 9:30 p. m., and
thus came to a close an event which will be long remembered with pleasure.

To a Freshman
Blessings on you, little one,
For your task is just begun;
Years before you only four,
Soon you'll be a Sophomore.
Then your brain will start to grow,
And onward through school you'll go.
Next a Junior's task you'll take,
Then a Senior's course you'll make;
Then with sunshine on your face
Fill that year with love and grace;
For to you 'twill be the best,
Better still than all the rest.
Take this to your heart as true,
I've been Fresh and Senior, too.
