FATHER’S DAY
On both my mother and
father’s side of the family,
we are native Texan - and
proud of it. Originally, my
family is from the Whitney-
had to hobble over 60 acres
to get to the house so my
mother could get the catfish
out of my foot. Instead of
getting sympathy from my
mom and dad, I got a
spanking - which made my
foot feel a lot worse. When
my children could see how
far the pond was from the
their families, including old farmhouse, at least they
actual copies of birth,
death, and marriage certifi-
cates. Since I know very lit-

Searching back for veri-
fiable information on my
family was more fun than I
imagined. It was a delight-
ful day of learning more
about my own past, as well
as my children’s heritage. It
also provided me with the
opportunity to show my
children where I grew up.
For them, they were able to
put something tangible to

history. As we were leaving
the courthouse, an older
gentleman came up to me
and asked how I spelled my
last name. After spelling it,
he asked me if I was related
to a Cecil Tilley. Before I
could answer, he went on to
tell me Cecil was one of the
hardest working and honest
men he knew.

eyes as I proudly told him
Cecil was my father,
the stories I had told them Although my dad has been
over the years.
One story was about the
time I stepped on a catfish.
The spillway to our farm
had given away and most of
the water ran out. In the
watery mud at the bottom both your earthly father and
were several large catfish, your heavenly Father.
