Acting seminar held Monday
by Ann Jones
Last Monday,the Fine Arts
Center sponsored a seminar on
auditioning and how to get
started in an acting, singing, or
modeling career. The panelists
were Charles Balanger, assistant
director of Casa Mana, Ben
Stephenson, a professional actor
from Fort Worth, Mike Crabtree,
a professional model from Fort
Worth, and Marcie Smith,, a
musical theatre performer from
Dallas.
Balanger discussed auditioning
for plays, IJe said that most
professional actors and singers
belong to the Actors Equity
Union, the Musicians Union, or
the Screen Actors Guild. He
stated that making an ap-
pointment was very important to
avoid waiting for hours, and that
a person should be on time for an
appointment once he makes it.
■ Crabtree discussed how to start
a modeling career. He said a
person should first sign with a
modeling agency. At first you
might have to sign with a small
agency. Get pictures made with
different "looks," i.e. country,
business executive and sporty.
Stephenson discussed starting
a career in films. He stated that
first a person should get pictures
and copies of his resume and send
them, along with a request for an
audition to agents, ad agencies
and independent theaters. When
going for an audition, he stressed,
dress nicely and girls should not
wear too much makeup.
Smith discussed auditioning for
a musical theater. She said you
should picture a characater, then
go to the audition and sing the
song as that character. She also
stressed the importance of being
prepared and singing a song you
enjoy singing.
The panel all stressed im-
portance of sending resumes and
pictaures and being prepared for
the audition. They recommended
three books to read for people
who are interested in a career in
acting, singing, or modeling.
They are: Auditioning by
Michael Shurtleff, Acting
Professionally by Robert Cohin,
and How to Break into Modeling,
Theater, and Films by Nina
Blanchard.
