A Lot Like You, A Lot Like Me
Do you have knocking knees just because you get stressed?
Then you are a lot like me! I like talking about Lot, Abraham’s
nephew who lived in Sodom because he is a lot like you and
a lot like me.
Generally, when you think about Lot you don’t have a lot
of respect for him. Abraham gives him the choice of where to
go so he takes what looks the best, land wise. Angels come to
tell him to leave Sodom and the men of Sodom want to have
sex with them. He offers his daughters to them instead. When
the angels tell him to flee to the mountains he is afraid and asks
to go to a different city. He winds up going to the mountains
anyway. His wife turns to salt because she disobeys the angels
about looking back. In the mountains his daughters get him
drunk so they can sleep with him and have children because
they think they are all that’s left alive.
But Peter in 2 Peter 2:7-8 calls him righteous Lot - one
tormented by the ungodliness around him. I don’t doubt he
had knocking knees as he fled Sodom, but he trusted in God.
Hebrews 11 has a list of great men of faith. Barak is listed
as a great man of faith. This is the guy that won’t go out to
battle unless Deborah goes with him. Knocking knees? Ah, a
lot like you and a lot like me.
David was a great man of faith - a man after God’s own
heart. He stood against Goliath though his brothers feared
him. He defeated many Philistines. Yet, once he goes to a
Philistine city and the king is going to kill him. He pretends to
be crazy to survive - knocking knees and not trusting in God to
take care of him. A lot like you and a lot like me.
Now we have the task of trying to interest people in learn-
ing about God and Jesus. Guess what, I have knocking knees!
Guess what David tells us about God while he is in the midst
of different difficulties. Ps 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, and my
fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I
will trust;” The 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd, I’ll not
want. . .Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil.” We need to be like David and stand
on the rock, trust in the rock, so our knees don’t knock.
