Rural Correspondent,
Kvii > fa i'ni home should hay*

tion and a few to sell.
I prefer some ."•train of the nure-
tired type to mongrels. It costs on«
no more to feed a purebred flock a" !
th" returns are greater.
My choice i' White Leghorns for
their luying ability, quick growth,
>.-arly maturity, health and vigor. Oi
c urse they are not so large, but their
meat is so much finer and sweeter.
That makes up for their smailness
Where one is not sufficient for 21 mea1,
more may 1 e used.
Up until 1!'25, I raised mongrels, or
the mixed brteds. I always had
eggs "in sea. on.'' 1 had friers-- all
we could use, and some to sell. Thej
did not satisfay, so I decided to try
the White Legh rns, the laying
breed.
I borrowed $60.00 from one of the
Caldwell banks with which to pur-
chase baby chicks. I purchased 400
i*om a reliable hatchery, and hatch-
ed some eggs in my own little incu-
bator. I had excellent success. Thi*
was in the spring of 11)26, the first
year the Five Year Farm Program
was promulgated and fostered in the
county.
1 began getting eggs from these
pullets when they were five or six
months of age. They layed all
through the winter. I advertised
cockerels and pullets for sale, and
sold all of both that I could spare. I
«old one man fifty pullets at one
time that netted me $50.00. I adver-
tised again this winter and sold more.
1 had to return u number of checks
for orders that I could not fill.
1 know there is money in chickens
if they art- handled right. I have
some record hens 1 know, if I wis
• nly properly prepared to trap-nest
them.
One thing that I have noticed par-
' ''tilariy. and 'hit is, the t ar,y
tiati'ht," do better. They grow off
better and make better layers.
A f.\. pullet* hntched in February'

I am prepare! to take care of i*arl;>
h. 'rhes row with a 1000 caput ty
rooder and a nug little br" 'd":
house. I hope s me day to have
everything that goes to make a
sure-enough, modern chicken ranch.
The next important thing is plenty
of cows w th which to furnish plenty
of skimmed milk for the chicks to]
start them off right. Some are pre- j
dieting cheap eggs, but they will not
be as cheap as cotton, and much
more pleasure to work with. They
will give you happy returns if treat-
ed right. You strictly have to stav
on the job if you care to succeed,
just like any other work. People
may call you lucky, but I have
another name for it it's "plucky." j
I am keeping a debit and credit
sheet of my poultry operations this |
year just to show that it should be
cotton raised as a side line instead j
of the hen.
One worthy slogan goes, "a hen. a
cow and a s: w will lifit the mortgage." |
What will several of these do? Think
it over. It is these very things thnt
make us feel the call of spring that
draw us closer to nature the
stamina of life. Who wouldn't
them.

During the two years Mrs. Pheglcv
has been practicing the diversifica-
tion of farming she has accumulated
a large fi ck of purebred chickens,
a modi rr poultry house, a brooder
house and brooder, six head of fine
Jersey cows, a $:J0.00 canning outfit
and ft-.eral other miscellanious items.
I e. iiies she has enjoyed a much bet-
ter living for she has canned over
ó00 t ans and jars of fruit, vegetables,
etc. She made the choicest kind of
sweet potatoes, and corn meal. We
wont mention the spare ribs, back-
bones, and all the good milk and but-j
ter that she supplied he- table with, j
We will mention that she sold lots of
cream.
This was all accomplished by Mrs.
Phegley single handed.
Readers don't you think it an in-
dustrious ac* on the par* of Mrs.
Phegley? Don't you think the Five
year Farm program is worth while,
and that it is accomplishing wonder-
ful things in the county?
