Screwworms continue
to strikeout here
MISSION —Ten more cases
of screwworin—including one
far north of the Rio Grande
in Medina County--have turned
up in Texas this week through
Wednesday as the ominous
buildup of the livestock pest
continues to escalate.
In addition, Southwest Screw-
worm Project officials reported
the three lnfestatyons in Ari-
zona, the first attacks con-
firmed outside Texas this year.
The Medina County case was
especially disheartening to Dr.
James Novy, veterianrian in
charge of field operations for
the Screwworin lab, because
"when they get up In the hill
country It's awfully tough get-
ting rid of them."
It is one of the earliest cases
on record for that part of the
state, he noted.
The positive sample was
found in a cow navel on the
Alvin Wiemers property eight
miles southeast of Hondo.
Dr. Novy said the buildup in
Mexico poses a particular
threat to the Hill Country and
the Trans Pecos where sheep
shearing is presently underway.
"Shearing means wounds and
that of course, encourages
screwworms." He advises she-
ep raisers to be particularly
careful to inspect their ani-
mals after shearing and if pos-
sible to spray them with an
approved screwworm insecti-
cide.
Other positive cases found
this week were: Starr County
Zapata 3, Webb 2 and Duval
3,
1.
