Sandefer Says:
Winterize Lawn, Garden Tools
The best way to close out
the 1980 gardening season
and prepare for 1981 is to
"winterize" your lawn and
garden tools and equipment,
says David Sandefer, county
agent with the Texas
Agricultural Extension
Service, Texas A&M
University System.
For gasoline-powered
equipment such as lawn
mowers and rototillers, run
the engine until the gas tank
is empty. After the engine
cools, clean the housing
thoroughly, remove and
sharpen any baldes (after
disconnecting the sparkplug
wire), clean or replace the
air filter, and drain the oil.
Then store the equipment in
a garage or storage building
out of the weather.
Homeowners with
rechargeable tools sue! as
electric shears and edgers
should clean and oil the
blades before storing.
Charging and running such
tools several times during
the winter season will keep
them in good working order.
Drain all hoses, sprinklers
and other watering devices
and store them indoors to
prevent freeze damage.
Thoroughly clean fertilizer
spreaders and wipe them
with an oily rag to protect
metal surfaces. Also, oil all
moving parts, suggests
Sandefer.
Wash spray equipment
with detergent and warm
water and thoroughly clean
nozzles and any screen
filters. If a compression
sprayer fails to hold
pressure, it may need a set
of new leathers. Back-flush
hose-on sprayers to clean out
the siphon tube.
Finally, look over your
arsenal of pesticides and
discard any that are old or
have torn or rusted con-
tainers as well as those not
properly or clearly labeled.
A little time spent now
taking care of garden and
lawn tools and equipment
will put you in good shape
when the spring season rolls
around, says Sandefer.

tension Agent at Starr

FARM INCOME
PROSPECTS TO IM-
PROVE --Texas farmers
and ranchers will have to
"wait till next year" for any
improvement in their in-
come, believes an economist
with the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service, Texas
A&M University System.
Higher farm prices resulting
from a sizable drop in crop
production this year,
smaller meat supplies, and
strong export demand all
point to an improved
agricultural income picture
in 1981.

to the project.
When preparing holiday
meals, remember to keep
cold foods cold and hot foods
hot, reminds Dr. Cass Ryan-
Crowe, a foods and nutrition
specialist.
Careless handling of food
may turn a festive occasion
into a disaster if the food is
sailed and guests become
I. Room temperature is the
danger zone where food
bacteria grow best, she
explains.
Dr. Ryan-Crowe is on the
home economics staff of the
,'xas Agricultural Ex-
tension Service, The Texas
A&M University System.
U.S. population aged
during the past decade — the
median age reached 30, an
increase of more than two
years. Thus, half the
population is over 30 and half
is under 30 years of age, says
Nancy Gronovsky, a family
resource management
specialist.
According to a recent gov-
rnment survey, heart dis-
ease mortality has dropped
steadily for close to 30 years.

ered magic numbers in
