Henri Matisse
at the Dallas
Museum of Art
James Kolakowski
Contributing Writer
Staunchly conservative? Why not check
out Matisse: Painter as Sculptor at the
Dallas Museum of Art January 21 — April
29th? The DMA, in conjunction with the Nasher
Sculpture Center and the Baltimore Museum of
Art, is proud to present the first major exhibition
of Henri Matisse's sculptural works in two
decades. Though perhaps best recognized for his
association with the Fauves (wild beasts), Matisse's
shocking style is anything but untamed. For
over half a century, the master artist redefined
popular conceptions of space and color while
demonstrating an exquisite control over his
medium. A lawyer by trade, young Henri fled
from his wild white-collar position to submit to
the stringent requirements of art. Matisse took the
best ideas of contemporaries Moreau, Cezanne,
Van Gogh, and Signac, and used them to delight
his audience.
Staunchly cheap? Tickets to the exhibit are free
every third Thursday of the month for the first
500 people, beginning at 6:00pm. And if that's
not enough, every third Friday of the month the
DMA is open from 9pm-12am, featuring concerts
and performances for only $5 with your student
ID (last week also included a FREE French wine
tasting, Starbucks coffee, and portrait sketches).
Crowds are limited on Thursday but grow
significantly
Friday night.
Metered
parking is free
on weekends
and is easy to

museums. As
an added bonus,
the museum
staff is amongst
the friendliest

Crystal's Pizza and Spaghetti Proves No Palace
| C. Sweeney & E. Casey
A&E Editors
The glittering "Crystal's Pizza and
Spaghetti Palace" sign can be seen
from die highway. It seems to be
in its own enchanted world, stuck between
a Taco Bueno and Murphy's Music, oddly
resembling a New Orleans mansion. In
order to get to (he front counter, one must
travel through a long and winding hall,
sponge painted into a countryside mural.
Greeted by an employee sporting a neon
green t-shirt, one is instructed to chose
from the buffet options: the "Dinner and
Weekends" price of |:6.49 widi die option
of a bottomless beverage for ;f L45, or
"The Deal" diat includes 12 tokens along
with buffet and drink for die adult price of
$8.89. Or go all out and order "The Real
Deal" diat includes 24 tokens widi buffet
and drink for $10198.
The food can be compared to
Al\AM ARK s Pizza Rustica in die cafeteria;
toppings include pepperoni, Canadian
bacon, sausage, hamburger, bacon,
mushrooms, bell pepper, onion, green
olives, black olives, pineapple, jalapenos,
and anchovies. The menu also included a
salad, pasta, desert, and potato bar. as well
as hot wings and soups.
The atmosphere m one word is
"scad" - scary AMD sad. Think of it
as a combination of Chuckie Cheese's
and a haunted southern mansion. A kid
scented arcade is located next to a dark
dieater playing big screened Looney Tunes;
families gather not to chat with each odier
but to watch Tom outwit Jerry. If patrons
would prefer to converse,, a Victorian style
dining room/library, can be found opposite
die giant gumball machine.
In die center of die palace there is a
French gazebo widi a magician performing
for no one except the goldfish swimming
in their murky tanks. One tank was
converted into a table capable of seating
eight businessmen. Crystal's palace has
been known to host business meetings as
well as wedding receptions, bridal showers,
bachelor/bachelorette parties, and Girl
Scout lock-ins. On a typical Saturday,
Crystal's holds an average of twelve such
parties.
Before they leave, customers wouldn't
want to miss die room to die right of die exit.
Prior to die room is an armoire displaying
three shelves of eerie porcelain dolls; if
these don't grab die onlookers' attention, a
fortune told by the machine beside die doll
case will satisfy dieir interests. Continue
fardier right to view a room mysteriously
out of place.
A giant
fireplace,
carpet,
paintings,
artifacts, and
high back
chairs seems
like a perfect
place for
the wedding
reception
— if your not
worried about your guests reacting to die
mold or excusing themselves from the
Odiferous atmosphere.
The mishmash of Victorian architecture
with cheap, sticky, plastic furniture and
various sundries has been around for 30
years serving the families of Irving It is
an ideal place for curious visitors with a
stomach for die absurd.
Crystal's is located at 930 W Airport
Fwy, Irving, TIL Their contact number is
(972)579-0441.
Crystal's Pizza and Spaghetti Palace glitters from
the highway, beckoning the unsuspecting traveler.
