COMMENDATION-WILLIAM CURRY AND FRANCES
MAYHUGH HOLDEN
H. C. R. No. 21
WHEREAS, Dr. William Curry Holden and his talented and gracious
wife, Mrs. Frances Mayhugh Holden, have served the State of Texas for
many years as leaders in the fields of museum administration, research,
and the exhibition of art, history, and science; and
WHEREAS, Born in Coolidge, Texas, in 1896, Dr. William Holden
attended Rotan High School, later receiving three degrees from The
University of Texas at Austin. This distinguished gentleman taught for
four years in a country school, and was a professor of history for six
years at McMurry College in Abilene. He began his teaching career at
Texas Tech University in 1929; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Holden has served Texas Tech University in many
capacities. From 1929 to 1965 he was director of the university's
museum. In 1937, he became dean of Archaeology Research, and served
as dean of the Graduate School from 1945 to 1950. He has been professor
of history emeritus since 1968; and
WHEREAS, His professional affiliations are numerous. He has
served as an organizer and charter member of the West Texas Historical
Association, the Texas Archaeological Society, and the West Texas
Museum Association. In 1949, he initiated the creation of the Southwest
Collection. In 1969, he helped to organize the Ranch Headquarters
Association, and served as president of that organization in 1970. He is
currently serving as chairman of one of the association's major commit-
tees; and
WHEREAS, A highly respected author, Dr. Holden has written more
than 40 articles for professional journals in addition to seven historical
books and one historical novel. He is presently in the process of publish-
ing two other books; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Frances Holden is a leader in the cultural arts in
her own right, having been an active worker since 1950 in museum ad-
ministration, research and exhibition of art, history and science in asso-
ciation with Dr. Holden; and
WHEREAS, A native of Plainview, Mrs. Holden has received her B.A.
and M.A. degrees from Texas Tech University in anthropology and
history, respectively; and
WHEREAS, She organized the Women's Council of the West Texas
Museum Association and is the first honorary associate of the Council.
She holds memberships on the Board of the Texas Tech Foundation,
