DMFA Notes
An important index of a museum's stature is the number of works
from its permanent collection loaned to significant exhibitions.
One such DMFA work is Edward Hopper's Lighthouse Hill, a gift
of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Purnell, currently on view at London's
Hayward Gallery and already exhibited at New York's Whitney
Museum this fall in the Edward Hopper Retrospective.
Another DMFA work presently on loan in the Grand Palais in Paris
is Camille Pissaro's Apple Harvest at Eragny, a Munger Fund
Purchase.
In describing a poignant scene, a famous author once wrote,
"... and the earth moved." Much the same attitude prevails
among the DMFA community now that actual construction has
begun on the downtown location. The building site has been
mostly leveled and recontoured, the all-important concrete and
reinforced steel piers have been drilled and poured, and the
retaining walls are rapidly multiplying. By mid-April an imposing
frame should represent the skeleton of the future DMFA... Much
credit for the successful reception accorded the Shakespeare
and Suriname Exhibitions belongs to the Museum's ambitious
Education Dept. and the invaluable esprit de corps generated by
the docents... Congratulations are also due to members of the
SOS staff who helped to defeat a referendum that would have
seriously reduced the Museum's operating budget... According
to George Charlton, Chairman of the Board, there has been an
encouraging increase in the number of Associate
Memberships... The planning committee for the 1981 Beaux Arts
Ball will be co-chaired by Prissy Gravely and Gail Madden...
Michael Shtofman and former Director of Publicity, Debra,
happily reported the birth of son, Jeffrey Kevin, in early
January... Susan Geyer, retired Assistant Director of Education,
will follow suit shortly... Much regional interest has been
expressed in the forthcoming CONCENTRATIONS series,
featuring Southwest artists and organized by Sue Graze... the
Henri Cartier-Bresson Exhibition scheduled for June promises to
be a popular summer attraction.
Mayor Folsom Declares April as Architecture Month
The American Institute of Architects will be providing a series of
events to inform the public of significant contributions architects
make toward the beauty, planning, and growth of our city.
