Board to consider 6 percent tuition increase
Donna Haney
NEWS EDITOR
Pending approval of the
board of trustees, tuition rates
for 2002-2003 for general under-
graduates will increase by 6 per-
cent beginning with the summer
term, according to a press
release issued April 16.
The new proposed rate per
general undergrad hour is $340
per hour, with an annual block
tuition rate of $10,306 for full-
time students. Block tuition
enables full-time undergraduates
to earn anywhere from 12 to 18
hours per long semester (Fall
and Spring) at the same rate.
According to William
Bleibdrey, vice president of
finance and budget, "In order to
keep pace with the rising cost of
higher education, most or all col-
leges and

Car careens through campus
Donna Haney
NEWS EDrrOR
According to eyewitness
accounts, a car traveling at a
high rate of speed while trying
to elude police cut a path across
campus at approximately 9:15
a.m. on April 11.
Eunice Chavez, an MBA
student, saw the suspects travel
across the Brown Lupton park-
ing lot, cut across the campus
mall area and cross between the
Oneal-Sells building and the
library and exit the campus
through the parking area behind
Mulkey Hall.
"Chad Crenshaw [a senior
business management student |
and I were coming out of the
business building. We heard a
car hit another car
in the parking
lot," Chavez said.
"1 didn't see
it coming, but
Chad yelled at me
to get out of the
way. I saw three
people in the car.
They were driv-
ing as fast as they
could, not look-
ing to stop for
anyone. I was
scared and
shocked."

which direction the suspects
had gone.
According to Chuck
Huddleston, director of facili-
ties, Huddleston said the Fort
Worth police officers who were
in pursuit went around the block
rather than follow the car across
the campus grounds.
"We were lucky. He was
going pretty quick. I've been
told by students that when it
came down around Mulkey, the
tires left the ground. He was
going that fast," Huddleston
said.
"At that point, the cops did-
n't catch them, but they got a
license plate number," said
Huddleston. "I don't know if
they have caught them since
then."
"I know this
is supposed to be a
bad neighborhood.
1 have been a stu-
dent here since the
fall of '96," said
Chavez. "But until
this happened, I
thought it safe."

planned rate increase, and it
must be ratified by the board of
trustees this Friday on order to
go into effect."
Bleibdrey said the financial
aid package will be similar to the
one last year in total dollars, but
with an emphasis on rewarding
those students who remain at
Wesleyan.
"As we are able to attract
students in numbers greater than
our expected enrollment, our
pool for financial aid will rise
proportionally," he said.
"For example, if we are able
to enroll 10 percent more stu-
dents than are budgeted, our
financial aid will increase by 10
percent."
Bleibdrey said, "Our expec-
tation is that fall enrollment will
be up from last year's level."
When asked to compare
Wesleyan's proposed increase to
that of other local universities,
Bleibdrey said, "I am aware that
TCU's tuition increase is 8.7
percent and Baylor's is 12 per-
cent.
"I am not aware of the SMU
or UTA change, but that infor-
mation should be publically
available, although public
schools are more difficult to
compare."
Bleibdrey said, "We believe
that our tuition rate increase is at

The annual event was held on April 13 and

Unfortunately, the event, which was sponsored
by Student Life was cut short by the sever thun-
