Once again the thrills of the baseball world are upon us and
sport fans all over the country will be following their favorite teams.
From the time Vice-President Nixon throws out the first ball
at Washington until the last out of the World Series there will be
much conversation and differences of opinions concerning baseball
and its heroes.
Let's take a look at the American League and give our predic
tions for the present season.
Once again we must go along with the four time champion
New York Yankees. If their pitching holds out and it should
with the addition of Whitey Ford the Bombers will be in the
driving seat all the way. Mantle has been accepted in DiMaggio's
place and should be greater than ever this year.
The White Sox have a group of hustling youngsters and will be
battling the Yanks down to the last day. With the addition of Fain
and Stephens the Sox have added hitting power. Only their pitching
seems to be a question mark and if it should come through they may
slide in.
Cleveland with one of the greatest pitching staffs in baseball
failed by a few games of catching the Yanks in last year's pennant
race. No outstanding additions have been acquired and the Indians
will have to prove that they are to be contended with.
Lou Boudreau is planning on his youngsters this year with
hopes of bringing home a winning team. Boston has always
looked good on paper but even when they had all the power
they failed to produce when it was needed. Boudreau lacks a
starting string of pitchers.
YANKS TO REGRET TRADE
Washington has a large crop of ex-Yankee's and could make
the Yanks regret they ever traded them. In Jackie Jensen they have
one
of the best outfielders in either league. Watch out for this team
as they may be the dark horse of the league.
The Athletics have a good pitching staff and with the addition
of Robinson they have plenty of long ball hitters. They will make
it hard on any team.
Fans of the Tigers and Browns will be disappointed once again.
Neither team will be as far behind in the standings as last year. De
troit has looked good in spring training and with many new faces they
should prove better than last year. In a few years Briggs will bring
home a winner to the Motor City. This leaves the Browns to occupy
the cellar as there isn't too much -hope for Marty Marion and his
crew.
Now let's switch over to the senior circuit. It looks as if the
Dodgers will once again be in the series next October. They have
nearly the same team that finished on top last year and with the
addition of Russ Meyer their pitching staff should be strengthened.
Dressen has come up with some promising new faces and the Bums
will be hard to beat.
Look for the Phillies to give the Dodgers their closest com
petition. Last year they were the hottest team in the league at
the close of the season. They have one of the greatest pitchers
in baseball in Robin Roberts and with a little help from the
hitting department the Phillies will be in the thick of the battle.
GIANTS PITCHING A QUESTION
Pitching may be the downfall for the Giants. They have a
good hitting club but the hurlers will have to prove themselves before
Durocher's boys can become pennant contenders. Monte Irvin should
be back in form after his ankle injury last year and he could give
the Giants that added punch that seems to be lacking.
It looks like the Cardinals and Cubs will be fighting it out for
the other first division berth. The Redbirds have "Stan the Man
and Slaughter but lack that added punch that is needed for a cham
pionship team. I'll take the Cubs to nose the Cards in a close finish.
The Cubs have a potentially great pitching staff and with the hitting
of Sauer and Baumholtz Cavarretta's boys should be tough.
Many say that Cincinnati is the most improved team this year
and if Ted Kluszweski continues his hitting the Reds may win plenty
of ball games.
Milwaukee will take a few years to get accustomed to their new
surroundings and can't be expected to be in the running. Pittsburg
still has Kiner but one man can't win the pennant. Branch Rickey is
trying hard to bring a winner to Pittsburg but this isn't the year.
Once again we look at the crystal ball and see that Jackie
Jenson will win the batting crown in the American League and
will make the Yanks sorry they ever traded him. Cleveland's
Mike Garcia will lead the pitching parade and will be followed
closely by Bobby Shantz of Philadelphia.
Stan Musial will again win the batting crown in the National
League and Robin Roberts should win thirty games.
There you have them sports fans. Every day arguments will be
occuring—but remember we can't all be right.
