General Departmental Requirement
Majors in family and consumer sciences are required to make a "C"
or better in all major courses including general education
requirements that are included as a part of the major.
Note: Many required courses are not offered every year. Failure to
complete these courses when offered may delay graduation.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES (BS)
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to a program, a student must satisfy the
requirements listed in the SAT/ACTPlacement section of this
catalog.
General Education Requirements
General education requirements (University and Degree Core
requirements) for the BS degree are listed in the General Education
Requirements section of this catalog.
Specific requirements in the University Core are as follows:
* Fashion merchandising, 6 hours: BIOL 120, CHEM 101.
* General family and consumer sciences, 9 hours: BIOL 120,
CHEM 101, HIST 221 or 222.
* Human development and family studies, 6 hours: BIOL 120,
CHEM 101.
* Interior design, 9 hours: BIOL 120, CHEM 101, HIST 117.
* Vocational home economics education, 15 hours: BIBM 390,
BIOL 203, CHEM 101, literature in English, HIST 221.
Special requirements in the BS Degree Core are as follows:
* Fashion merchandising, 9 hours: ECON 260; ENGL 112 or
literature; PSYC 120.
* Food, nutrition, dietetics; 9 hours: POLS 225 or 226; ENGL
112 or literature; PSYC 311.
* Human development and family studies, 12 hours: ENGL
112 or literature; PSYC 120, 232; SOCI 111.
* Interior design, 9 hours: ART 221, 222 substitute for fine arts;
HIST 118.
* Vocational home economics education, 15 hours: ENGL 112

FASHION MERCHANDISING (BS)
Employment opportunities in fashion merchandising include
buying, selling, managing, fashion coordination, fashion promotion,
and fashion consulting. Prospective employers include retail stores;
advertising agencies; fashion market centers; and fabric, pattern, and
notions companies as well as textile and apparel manufacturers.

Departmental requirements for the BS in fashion merchandising are
as follows:
1. Family and consumer sciences, 35 hours: FCS 100, 401; 211,
212; 313, 314; 221 or 222; 241, 344, 432; 250 or 351 or
452; 495 and 3 additional hours advanced FCS.2. Business administration, 24 hours: ACCT 210; ECON 260
(fulfills 3 hours of Degree Core requirement), 261; BLAW
363; MGMT 330; MKI'G 340, 344, 345.
3. Other requirements, 6 hours: ART 105; CS 105.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 hours, students majoring in fashion
merchandising must take up to 10 hours of general electives,
including deficiency requirements in science and foreign language.
FOOD, NUTRITION, AND DIETETICS (BS)
The scope of food, nutrition, and dietetics is broad. Dietitians and
nutritionists are employed in health care, nursing homes, school
food programs, community and public health nutrition programs,
wellness centers, food science, education, marketing, and product
development, as well as research.
The general dietetics program is currently granted approval status by
the American Dietetic Association Council on Education I)iision of
Education Accreditation/Approval. 1)ictetic internships or pre-
professional practice programs are available. Consult with adviser.

General Electives

GENERAL FAMILY AND CONSUMER
SCIENCES (BS)
A degree in general family and consumer sciences provides an
excellent background for many entry-level positions in business, full-
time homemaking, or graduate studies. Some recommended elective
concentrations are art, business, communication, government,
human development and family studies, and journalism.
