Bass leaves Wesleyan
after completing best
season in nine years
He goes to Wayland Baptist
By Dominick Mastrangelo
Sports Editor/ The Rambler
In a move that shocked the
athletic department, Brad Bass,
head coach of the Texas
Wesleyan Baseball team for nine
years stepped down from his
position July 12 and accepted
the head coaching position at
Wayland Baptist University in
Plainvjew, Texas.
The move came after Bass
led the Ranis to their best sea-
son, compiling a record of 39-15
and coming one game from the
NAIA College World Series.
T he reason for the move,
according to Bass, was strictly
personal.
"My family is important to
me and in the past few years 1
haven't been showing it," said
Bass, who leaves Wesleyan with
a record of 261 -1K4.
Bass said the move was
rather quick but didn't come
without some thought.
"I asked to be released from
mv contract so 1 could talk to
other schools,** said Bass. "And I
made the decision about a week
later."
Aside from coaching, Bass
was also the assistant chair of
athletics, which included han-
dling the athletic budget, coordi-
nator for the annual baseball
banquet in January and taught
classes in the Exercise and Sport
Studies Department.
Bass' job at WBU will be
teaching in the school's ESS
Department and the baseball
coach.
Bass said he leaves the
school with no regrets.
"Wesleyan, the booster club, the
team and their families, as well
as the administration, have all
been good to me and I have no
complaint," he said.
Willie Gawlik was chosen to
fill the head coaching posi-
tion.Coach Gawlik comes from

Soccer team gets new coach, players
By Greg Bogomol
The Rambler
The Texas Wesleyan
soccer team will start the
1995 season with new head
coach Dave McAlpine.
"The outlook of the
soccer team looks brighter
than ever. 1 (McAlpine)
signed 10 recruits to help
out the four returning
starters: Tallal-Al-Attas,
Paul Stone, Marcus Garcia
and Nick Simic. The
returning players should
provide the leadership and
experience that the team
needs," said McAlpine.,
Some of the new
recruits include an Eagle
Scout and a member of the
Canadian National
Championship Team. Five
were team captains, one an
MVP, one all-region and
three all-district players. .
"We have a roster of 22
players of good quality
which should make post
season" a very reasonable
goal.," said McAlpine.

Golf team puts it together for
another winning season
By Greg Bogomol
The Rambler
Most people would think it
hard to improve over a National
Championship year, but not head
coach Bobby Cornett, the NAIA
Golf Coach of the Year.
Cornett said, "Last year was
a wonderful year for Wesleyan
golf, but there were several dis-
appointing tournaments to the
guys, as we had three runner up
finishes during the course of the
season."
The Texas Wesleyan Golf
Team won its fifth National Title
in school history on May 26.
During the National Golf
Tournament, held at Bailey Golf
Ranch in Owasso, Ok., the Rams
made a dramatic come from
behind final round to cap a suc-
cessful season. During the tour-
nament the Rams were as far
back as fourth place and 12 shots
out of the lead.
On the final day of the tour-
nament was a spring thunder-
storm which halted play for six
hours but when the rain stopped,
the Rams supplied some light-
ning of their own, posting the
best score of the day and win-
ning the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics Men's
Golf Championship by one
stroke over West Florida.
' Heading the charge for back
to back national titles is two
time All-American Jamie
Drysdale. Other seniors from
last year's team are former All-
American Honorable Mention
Steve Galko and multiple tourna-
ment medalist Rob Lang.
Sophomores Richard Noon and.
Richard Lang, a redshirt fresh-
man, heads up the rest of the.
returning Ram team.
Several new players on the
golf team for the 95-96 season
are Ryan Farrow, Matt Dunn and
Jonathan Phillips.
The 1995 title is added to the
ones received in 1964, 1969,
1975 and 1990.
Major League Baseball owners
and players need lessons in sinceri-
ty liillii
By Dominick Mastrangelo
Sports Editor, The Rambler
Iverytime baseball team
owners and players try to apolo-
gise tor the recent strike they
manage to stumble over their
apologies They hoped that the
transition from strike to season
would be 'A smooth one They
thought they could make the fa&s
forget the strike ever happened
b> offering reduced ticket price-
and even going so far as to give
away ail the tickets to a single
game as the Houston Astros did.
Baseball has left an after*
taste in the mouths of baseball
fans that is far from pleasant
Baseball has come out of this
strike smelling nothing like
roses To tell the truth, some
thing smells very fishy in the
tacks of baseball. If reeks of
another strike and the irreparable
damage to baseball's whole-
some, All-American image
Baseball has yet to figure
out the right way to apologize to
its fans. They just don't get it.
They don't seem to understand
that it's not the number of auto-
graphs a player signs because
even the most forgiving fan
knows darn well he's signing
because some memo from the
front office says to sign more
autographs and shake more
hands than a candidate running
for pubtic office
"We're sorrv "
As' if the strike didn't last
long enough, they rushed the
players through an abbreviated
spiring training so when the sea-
son does begin in May the play
is shottv and very unprofession-
al.
"We're sorry."
The abbreviated All-Sur
break pots Major League
Baseball in the unfamiliar post*
tt.vn of having to distribute more
than 5*000 tickets in order to fill
The Ballpark in Arlington some-
thing that has never happened.
"We're sorry."
Things got even worse when
when Jack McDowell, pitcher
for the New York Yankees decid-
ed to apologize in his own spe-
cial finger flicking way. Chili
Davis of the California Angels
used his finger in a different way
by going into the stands after a
heckling fan and poking the
wrong fan in the eye.
"We're sorry."
The friends of baseball and
the fans of baseball aren't above
turning their backs on the sport.
We've reluctantly taken the hand
Offered by the MLB in friend-
ship We've grasped reluctantly,
so as not to be hurt again like the
wife who goes back to her
unfaithful husband even though
she knows he'll do wrong again.
We the fans (somewhere in
the back of our mind) have the
feeling that baseball hasn't been
totally honest with ui.
■\s much as I would love to
trust this game again, as much as
I would love to see all the ball-
parks filled again, and the hatch-
et buried between the fans and
baseball. I can't That'- not to
say I won't go to the games but
speaking as a fan for the fans
who refuse to go...
"We're sorry."
