The February Atlantic is a notable
number containing in addition to its
new quota of 14-1 pages a Supplement
giving a full account of the Holmes

and letters of that very interesting oc-
casion Several new chapters are giv-
en of Mr. Howell's serial "Tho Un-
discovered Country" and it is safe to
say that any one who fails to read it
loses some of the most delightful of
current reading. Mr. Longfellow's
poem "Helen of of Tyro" in the
measure of "Sandalphon." is one of
the most pleasing poems Mr. Longfel-
low has ever written. Richard Grant
White has a curiosly interesting arti-
cle on "Antonious Stradivarious and
tho Violin." Goldwin Smith contrib-
utes a striking essay on "Pessimism"
which is sure of wide reading and lib
eral criticism. C. P. Craneh the poet
writes an interesting and instructive
essay on."Wordsworth." Miss Wool
son has a short story "The South
Devil" whieh no lover of good short
stories should miss. There is an un-
signed paper worth reading on "The
Strong Government Idea.' There are
in add tion to other poems aod essays
criticisms of Mr. Fake's new Essays
Dickens' Letters ; and a varied collec-
tion of bright things in tbo Contribu-

How to I9 Nobody.
It is easy to be nobody and we will
tell you how to do it. Go to the drink-
ing saloon to spend your loisure time.
You need not drink much now; just a
little beer or some other drink. In the
meantime play dominoes checkers or
something clso to kill time so thatyou
will be sure not to read any useful
books- If you read anything let it be
the dime novels of the day; thus go on
keeping your stomach full nnd your
head empty and yourself playing time
killing games and in afow years you'll
be nobody unless you should turn out
a drunkard or a professional gambler
either of which is worso than nobody.
There are any number of young men
hanging about saloons just ready to
graduate and be nobodies.
Kallroud 'I'll 11c.
A Herald reporter bad a lengthy
conversation on yesterday with Col.
Goodwin and Maj. Hunter the survey-
ors of the International route. In ro
tation to the proposed location of the
depots of the road in this city they
wero like tho 'mystio lady' in Pinafore
decidedly shady and gave as thoir
reason for being so that it would not
do to tell whore they intended to lo-
cate them booause if they did it would
eive real estate in these proposed lo
calities such a boom that the road
could not purchase land sufficient to
locate them on tho price would become
so exorbitant. Speaking of the bonus
of fifteen thousand dollars to the mile
which the International officials are
seeking to secure from the government
for tho extension of the road to Lare-
do Major Hunter stated that if the
bonus was given to Gen. B.irnos' road
and the Barnos road was built from
here to Laredo there would be no in-
ducement for the International road
to come to Can Antonio at all as it
would bo fifty miles near to tho Rio
Grande for the road to bo built as it
would be on an air lino from Austin
at Eagle Pass. . In this event the road
would pass through Boerne and leave
San Antonio thirty-two miles to tho
south.
The idea so iudustriously kept in
circulation that Grant will uotaccopt
a nomination for tbo presidency un-
less it be unanimously tendered bim
carries no weight with icand influences
no thinking man s judgment. It was
started by the friends of the ex-president
simply as a piece of political strat-
egy to pull tbo wool ovet tho eyes of
the credulous and relieve Grant's can-
didacy as far as possibly from the ap-
pearance of partisanship. The aster-
tion may safely bo made and the ac
tion of the Harrixburg convention
clearly proves it that the nomination
is not only part of a programme long
since preconceived but that it will be
accepted no matter bow bitter the
struggle or by how narrow a margin it
may ba secured. It will only remain

SAN MARCOS
FEEE PRESS
FOE 1880.
Tho Free Press having but recent
ly entered upon its lXth Volume at
the beginning ot an important year
would again modestly present its claims
to the patronage of tha people ot Hoys
county and adjaoeut localities.
It will continue to maintain its repu
tation as a faithful exponent ot the
community which it represents lead
ing oil' in tho direction ot all worthy
material improvements anu political
social and moral reforms. To this end
to the fullest presentation of tho lo-
cal news and the most faithful devo-
tion to local interests the paper will
be primarily devoted.
The year 1880 will be distinguished
as that ot the Presidential and of out
general State and county elections and
hence will be one ot peculiar political
activity aod interest. In the National
contest the Fkee Press will be found
standing firmly by the principles upon
which Tii.uen and Hendricks tri-
umphed be I ore the people in 187t. As
the natural and eminently fit repre-
sentatives of those principles it should
rejoice aeaid to follow the same leader-
ship and it is not without hopes that
it shall be permitted to do so.
In our local politics the Free Pbess
will continue- to aim to do equal and
exact iustioe to all asnirants to office.
treating all with courtesy and giving
all perfectly fair play.
Now in an appropriate time to sub-
scribe. We would be ghtd if all friends
of the Free Press would act as vol
untary asents. At least show it to
iyonr neighbors and ask them to sub
scribe. All
postmasters aro also au
thorized agents.
