Spring has arrived and with
it comes warmer weather gen-
tle rains and the sounds of
heavy machinery.
THE 62ND Engineer Bat-
talion 13th Corps Support
Command is on the go with
three simultaneous construc-
tion projects.
Although the projects started
on March 2 they have differ-
ent completion times because
of the nature of the project.
Company A is erecting a
head wall and a storage build-
ing at the rock quarry with a
projected completion date of
April 30. A head wall is the

“There is a lot involved with
making a good parking lot”
said Sgt. John Backensto con-
struction surveyor. “I have
seen a lot of parking lots that
crack or get flooded.”
“THE MOST important part
of a parking lot is drainage.
That’s the first thing to think
about” Backensto said. “Sec-
ond to drainage is the sub-base
(the ground under the asphalt).
We have to smooth the sub-
base wet the ground and com-
pact it over and over.”
Backensto explained if the
sub-base is not compacted
enough the asphalt will start
to crack. “After time and ero-
sion the top will start to come
