CHIHUAHUA March 28. The attack of the last line of the defenses of
Torreon began at noon today Villa wired. Last night's assault failed on
account of the lack of hand grenades which arc ir)0t useful for street fight-
ing. Villa ) said to have received five thousand more grenades before re-
newing the attack today It Is reported that the positions the Rebels cap-
tured in the business district last night Including Bull Ring Smelter and
principal hotel are held securely.
Zaragosa's brigade lost twenty-five per cent of Its men It is reported. It
la rumored that the Federal Genera) Velasco suicided but this has not been
credited. It is also reported that three Federal generals who Were repor-
ted killed In last night's dispatches really suicided.
Sixteen coaches with wounded soldiers reached here today from Torre-
on. They are the vanguard of a long Mnc of wounded extending three hun-
dred miles between here and Torreon. Most of these are the first arrivals
of soldiers of Denavldes and Zaragosa's brigade which attempted to blaze
a way and draw the Federal fjre..
Thes Zaragosa men were mowed down In heaps and scores. They Went
to almost certain death. One youthful member with a grim smile on his
face and arms and legs wrapped iriragi said as he climbed from the train
"Hell met us at Torreon." He was one of the marty small boys of the Zar-
agosa brigades. These soldiers aad that Villa had not taken Gomez Palaclo
when they carried him off the field. They said that the Federals surprised
Villa by strength of their entrenchments and stubbornness. There were
three hundred wounded on the first train and other trains of wounded are
reported still en route with each bringing hundreds.
Homes of the rich exiled Mexicans were despoiled of their ljrlck-abrack
and fine furniture to provide costly decorations for the Palace of Carranra
which he will occupy here.
