About Blackleg.
A proof of the seventeenth annual
report of the bureau of animal in-
dustry D. E. Salmon. I). V. M. chief
on the free distribution of blackleg
vaccine hy Dr. Victor A. Xoganrd
V. 8. has been recleved hero.
The report states that during the
year 1900 there were prepared by the
pathological division of the bureau
of animal Industry l07ftl.r0 doses of
blackleg vaccine which were distrib-
uted among 6142 applicants located
In forty states and territories. On
An average each applicant received
about 175 doses.
In the report Is a tabulated state-
ment showing the actual merit of
the bureau vaccine ns a preventative

cattle. The buffalo for Instance
was undoubtedly immune from black-
leg while the long horns which a
few years ago formed the great ma-
jority of the herds of the West pos-
sessed great powers of resistance to
It. For this reason the disease was
of minor Importance ten years ago
although there Is evidence of Its re-
peated appearance at longer or
shorter intervals among the herds in
various parts of the country.
"The losses were looked upon as un-
avoidable and did not In magnitude
compare with the losses which now-
adays may befall the cattle owner In
the Infected districts who neglects to
protect his high grade and full-blooded
stock agaiUBt this disease. The
recrudesenco of blackleg dates back
to the time when the stockmen began
Improve the native breeds with
strains of pure bred cattle and as
tno long-legged long-horned far-
roaming beasts gradually Jbecnme
transformed Into the. deep-chested
beefy aud more indolent cattle of the
present day there also occurred a
gradual retrogression In the vitality
and in that power of resistance to
diseases which characterized the na-
tive stock. In certain sections of the
country where the disease has been
practically unknown or where it oe-
' curred only at Intervals of two three
or four years it gradually became
more and more prevalent until at
the present time it has become of
dally occurrence.
The report of the government says
that the mastering of blackleg is not
a hopeless undertaking althougn it

after vaccination thereby becomes

the saving of $250000 worth of cattle
at $20 per head by reducing the mor-
tality from approximately 12 percent
to one-half of 1 per cent It must be

the government for this purpose Is
well spent.

tract from a letter written Dr. Sal-
mon on the subject of blackleg by
Charles Goodnight of (joodnight
Tex. In which he says: "I have been
satlslled for the last ten years that
buffaloes a re not susceptible to black-
leg but have not felt disposed to give
It to the world as a whole nslt may
yet develop. I was among the wild
buffalo for years where they were Im-
mensely numerous and many thou-
Hands were of the proper age to take
It. I have now been breeding them
about twenty years and am quite
positive no case of blackleg developed
during: that time and up to this
writing It holds good to those that
are only one-fourth blood.

although I think they are Immune. 1
have been trying for several years to
establish a race of cattle lroin the
buffalo. So far I have only partly
succeeded. When this In done It will
be the greatest thing for the cattle
Industry of America. They have
some characteristics that are very
valuable to this Interest. Besides
their great weight and the extra
quality of the meat they are: First
most probably Immune from Muck-
leg; second they never eat loco;
third they never He with their backs
down hill which causes much loss in
weak cattle; fourth they do not
go In bog holes; fifth they have the
greatest lungs of any animal on
earth; sixth they put on more flesh
for what they eat than other an)
main."

The government report says that
It cannot be doubted that blackleg Is
on the Incruase and that If It were
not for vaccination the lows would be
appalling. The Increase In mortality
from a disease which must have pre-
vailed for generations is without
doubt due to differentiation of the
various breeds and the grading up
