Kansas City Stock Report.
Kansas City Stock Yards
March. 22 KS02.
This week's business in the
cattle yards is almost an exact
counterpart of last week's ai
slight falling off in supplies and
with a few exceptions a marked
falling off in quality and a!
slight advance in values. The
advance this week was very
general and covered all classes
of slaughtering and feeding cat-
tle that made any pretence of
quality. The top notch of the
week was 6.79 that price being
reached by two bunches each
of which averaged over 1500
pounds. The supply of toppy
butcher cows and heifers is still
below the requirements of the
trade one lot of that class that
averaged 1009 pounds bringing
6.25 per hundred with several
sales reaching 6.00 and G.10.
Choice export and dressed beef
steers are selling from $(3.45 to
(5.70 with the plainer grades
bringing H 75 to $0.40 butcher!
cows and heifers 3.40 to u.25
cancers 2.50 to 3.40 bulls
83.25 to 5.00 and veal calves
$4 50 to 6.50.
The stocker and feeder trade
is of course light at this season
but the demand is more than
equal to the supply and all the
offerings that have any merit
are ready sale at s;rong values.
Heavy breeders are bringing as
high as 5.25 with prices ranging
from 2.25 for common stuff to
4.25 for choice stock.
The supply of Southern fed
steers is away below the require-
ments of the trade. The top
price for the week and season
was scored on Thursday by
Fred Garrett of Miami I. T.
who sold 22 steers that weighed
1190 pounds each it C 00 per
hundaed. The packers are
showing a preference for South-
ern divisiod range from COO for
choice steers to 4.50 for very
plain varieties with the usual
run of good butcher steers sell-
ing from 5:00 to 5.65 cows 3.50
to 5.50 bulls 3 25 to 5.00 and
canners 2.50 to 3. .50.
This was a week of disap
pointment to the packers in the
hog division with light receipts
land the most of the offerings
absolutely without any sign of
quality. The only encouraging
feature in the week's business
was that prices were a trifle
higher which fact was probably
more pleasing to the producer
than to the packer. The high-
est price of the week was
reached to-day with top hogs
bringing 6.60 prices ranging
from 5.50 for lights to 6.60 for
choice heavies.
The supply of sheep on Mon-
day was the largest for several
weeks. The local market dis-
played an unusuallyspirited de-
mand and the advance inaug
urated at that time has improv-
ed during the week and prices
today are fully 25 cents higher
than they were last Saturday.
Lambs have possibly shown
the most strength which fact
was largely traceable to the
better quality of the lamb sup
ply. We cloe a good week's
business with prices today at
top notch of the week. Native
lambs are selling from 5.35 to
fi.60 Western lambs 6.25 to 6.55
Western wethers 5.20 to 5.60
Western yearlings 5.65 to 6.00
ewes 4.65 to 5.15 stockers and
feeders 3.00 to 5.25.

Unfed cattle are weak and
thin but very few deaths are re-
ported. Grass is getting green
but it will be a month yet before
it will be of any real bene-
fit or before deaths cease en-
tirely. The death rate will
probably be the lowest known
for many years.

"THE LONG TRAIL"
OF THE CA TTLE PA NGE
has given prominence in history to the now world famous Texas
Panhandle. But few years ago the wonderful possibilities of
this region as a wheat country became known and great things
were prophesied for "The Granary of the South" which subse-
quent harvests justified- Vomparahvely recent is the demand of
good livers for "Vernon Cantaloupes" but it's come to stay.
Those acquainted with this section and its wealth as a producer
of feed-stuffs corn and cotton have long believed in it nor have
they been moving away. When Xorthwestern Texas remained
conspicuous for its excellence in the face of almost universally
discouraging crop conditions people began to see reasons for the
faith of those inviting them to enter and possess the land; and
now with farms and ranches being bought daily by new settlers
coming in by wagon and rail three new railroads now building
and four more projected seeking a share of the general prosperity
good reason is evident for the favor with which the territory
along "THE DENVER ROAD" is reaardfii hii
