TRAVELOGUE A LA FANCY
"I'm bored!" How often have I heard.that statement repeated!
But is there really any justification for its use? I think not.
For, as Stevenson said, "This world is so full of a number of
.hat I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings." We would
all be so much happier if we would shake off the petty cares
of our existence and with a smile on our lips and a song in
our hearts, go a-gypsying around the world to see what lies
beyond our horizons. If we were to do this what would we
find? Perhaps.................
White cotton, piled high by singing Negroes, their ebony skins
glis ening with sweat; dark-haired women with moonlight in
their eyes and roses in their hair; gallant, polished gentlemen
with mellow voices and drums in their hearts.........
The South.
Throbbing drums, reverberating through the jungle, the
rhythmic pat of dusty feet and eerie chant of a voodoo priest
wailing on the wind the turbulent emotions of the savage
embodied in sound ..................
Haiti.
Sleek, dark-haired senoritas, whirling skirts, dashing caball-
eros, colorful capes, the flash of white teeth against dark skin,
the warmth of a kiss, the gleam of a knife............
Spain.
Spewing, rumbling, muttering, angry-looking pools of burning
crimson, glowing purple, poisonous amber bubble with hot
restlessness, like drops of hell oozing through to the surface of
the earth............
The Bad Lands of Arizona.
A peon, with creaking sandals, scarlet serape, and spreading
sombrereo tying his burro under a tree, and leaving the dusty
searing heat of the road to enter the cool cathedral, and the
click of his rosary blends with murmur of his voice as he
pleads, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, intercede for us with the
Son of Thy glory..............
Mexico.
Twinkling silver skates send small slivers of ice, flashing with
points of color from the sun flying in every direction; fair--6-
