AND COACHES DEI
Frozen Water in Pipes of Baker Coach Heat-
er Caused an Explosion Monday Noon
Two Passenger Coaches Damaged.
The terrible cold of Monday was re-
sponsible for the explosion of the
boiler of a Baker heater in a hand-
some Santa Fe passenger coach. ' The
explosion made a noise so loud that
It was heard in many parts of the
city by people almost a mile away.
Many who heard the sound thought
an engine boiler had exploded at the
roundhouse and hastened to the scene
expecting to see havoc and wreck.
The damage was undoubtedly caus-
ed from the water freezing In the boil-
er and pipes leading to the boiler of
the heater. A B. Baine the local
Santa Fe car repairer had been In the
coach lesa thaa lye adnvtes before
the. boiler exploded. "He tested the
heater and thought It was. all right
Fire had been started In the flre place
antf -this is thought to have been the
main reason of the boiler's bursting.
The heat and the" Ice In the pipes
formed the combination which caused
such damage to the two coaches.
The explosion occurred at 12:40.
The minute the noise was heard sev-
eral persons nearby rushed to the
spot expecting to find someone hurt
Fortunately no one was In the car.
Had they been they would have been
either killed or badly maimed. The
explosion -scattered pieces of the in-
terior of the coach in ever direction.
A hole was blown In the roof almost
ten feet square In coach SS9 where the
