The Bulletin is in receipt of a letter
from Mrs. J. M. Lewis wife of .Tiidd
Mortimer Lewis the poet laureate of
Texas stating that Mr. Lewis is fairly
on the road to recovery now having
just undergone an operation for ap-
pendicitis. The physicians state that
the poet could not have lived twelve
hours longer without the operation.
The Bulletin is glad to know that Mr
Lewis is on the road to recovery and
hopes that ere mpny days his pen wiil
again scatter smiles and sunshine to
the readers over Texas.
The little cool snap of last night
only makes us appreciate the excellent
weather that has prevailed throughout-
this section of the state for the past
two months. Warm weather with
I lenty of moisture has been the great
est blessing that could have come to
us at this time. The fanners are well
up with their work the wheat and oats
are looking fine corn is planted and
much of it up and cotton planting
will be fairly under way Svithin a few
days.
The state health officer is authority
for the statement that there is consid
erable disease prevalent over the state
at present. In many towns small po.
is raging and typhoid fever is appear-
ing in others. It behooves the citizens
of every town to take every precau-
tion with the coming of warm weather
to combat disease germs. There is no
better safeguard than to clean the en-
tire town Let the mayor designate a
clean up day and let every citizen join
in the work. The standard of health
will be raised in the city and much dis-
ease and possible epidemics may be
averted. Let's got busy before it iq
too late.

"Do you believe in the practice of
public servants accepting fees or
emoluments from the trusts that are
bitter enemies' to the people." That is
the question to be answered by the in-
tellegent voters of Texas. Bailey Is a
secondary consideration. If we con-
done Mr. Bailey's conduct id his close
relations to the trusts we say to the
hundreds of thousands of school boys
who. will within a few years be hand-
ling the reins of government that it
is legitimate for any man in public of-
fice to walk with one hand behind him
receiving graft money while with the
other he Is gesticulating in an effort
to make more impressive his denuncia-
tory speeches against the trusts.

Roosevelt elicited much applause
Tillman declares Roosevelt is "drunk
with power" and that he has dona
more to destroy states' rights and to
centralize government than all hirf
predecessors. And yet Mr. Tillman is
found in line with and supporting-almost
every important measure advo-
cated by the president and has on
more than one occasion with his -vitriolic
wit and forensic speech helped to
whip others in line for a pet measure
of Roosevelt Mr. Tillman with his
glaring eye and "pitchfork" appear-
ance is a "crowd getter" in the senate
but his explosions at Roosevelt i" en-
tirely out of line with his every day
work In the senate. .

The Chronlcje has made a good
move. It has too long been the prac-
tice of the country press to boom the
'other fellow's game for small recom-
p.-nse. The country editor does not
do this because he has received a pass.

BRYAN OR BAILEY.
An Associated Press cdrresiondent
yesterday asked 'William J. Bryan
what he considered to be the leading
issue before the people.
"The only issue" Mr. Bryan replied
quickly "which manifests itself in all
the other issues is this: Shall the
government be administered for the
protection of the rights and the ad-
vancement of the interests of the gen-
eral public or shall it be controlled by
the representatives of corporate
wealth and administered in the inter-
est of the few? The trust question
the tariff question the labor question
and all other questions Involve this is-
sue. All the abuses of which the peo-
ple complain rest upon the privileges
and the favoritism secured by favor
seeking corporations and these privil-
eges or favors are always at the ex-
pense of the masses."
The people of Texas are in a posi-
tion peculiarly fitted tolappreciate the
absotute truth and logic contained In
It is such utterances as those of Mr.
Bryan to the press correspondent that
makes the great Commoner distaste-
ful to the Oil Senator. And yet some
of Bailey's henchmen think to fool
the people by attempts to organize
Bryan clubs and attach the name of
the Standard Oil Senator to tfiat of
the man who is the leader of the mass-
es against such trusts.
this statement of the great Commoner.
The Waters-Pierce Oil company a
gigantic trust was once dusted from
this stnte' by the people by a favor
extended to it by a Texas Senator the
tiust camfe hack lnto the state the
senator received large fees and loans
of money whenever lie needed them in
re-turn for the favor the people paid
the bill. :Mr. Bryan truly says.'Such
favors are always at the expense of the
people." No wonder Senator Bailey
Hnds it uncongenial to be in the sanr
city with the Nebraska It Is no sur-
prise that Bailey should throaten to
resign if Bryan was nominated "be-
cause it would be so unpleasant for
him" to be in Washington with .Bryan.
