Award
S
even major national organiza-
tions and corporations have been
named recipients of the William H.
Spurgeon III Award for 1981, Ex-
ploring's highest national tribute to
supporters of its programs.
Named in honor of one of the prin-
cipal architects of contemporary Ex-
ploring, the award was first presented
in 1971. This year's winners, selected
by the BSA's National Exploring
Committee, bring to 58 the total
number of firms and organizations so
honored to date.
The 1981 winners include:
• Amateur Athletic Union of the
United States (AAU), Adm. John F.
Thompson, USCG (Ret.), director; a
major supporter of the Explorer
Olympics and Exploring sports pro-
grams, the AAU has lent its coopera-
tion and expertise to sports and fit-
ness activities for the past 10 years.

(ALCOA), William B. Renner, pres-

the country.

Chiefs (IAFC), Donald D. Flinn,
general manager, and International
Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF),

joint award, honoring these groups
for their continuing commitment to
Exploring, as evidenced by the fact
that America's fire departments
operate Explorer posts with a total
membership of nearly 7,800.
• National Guard Bureau, Lt. Gen.
Verne E. Weber, chief, which has
provided expertise, manpower,
equipment, and support to Exploring
through its 53 local state affiliates,

Law
Enforcement
Assistance
Award
A
19-year-old California Ex-
plorer, whose dedicated police work
resulted in six felony arrests and the
recovery of thousands of dollars
worth of stolen property and con-
traband drugs, is the winner of the
1981 Law Enforcement Assistance
Award.
She is Kristy Marie Zaun, who
serves as Captain of Explorer Post
544 of the San Lucia Area Council in
San Luis Obispo, Calif. Kristy is a
charter member of the post, which is
chartered to the San Luis Obispo
Sheriff's Department. Her award in-
cludes a $500 scholarship presented
by the U.S. Secret Service.
According to Deputy Dennis J.
Lovejoy, post Advisor, Kristy acted
as a confidential informant, supplying
information to authorities that she
had cultivated on her own.
On June 27, 1980, as the result of
Kristy's information, four felony ar-
rests were made for burglary in the
town of Atascadero, Calif., and more
than $3,500 worth of stolen property
was recovered.
Then, on Sept. 24, 1980, also as the
result of information supplied by
Kristy, narcotics agents seized $4,000
worth of marijuana from a residence
in Atascadero and arrested two felony
suspects for possession of the drug
for sale.
The following month, Kristy was
honored as her post's "Explorer of
the Year"—not only for the two cases
in which she played such a vital role,
but also for the hundreds of hours she
has devoted to her post, the sheriff's
department, and her community.
As Deputy Lovejoy said: "If it had
not been for her keen observations
and quickness to act, the cases would
have gone undetected, more likely
than not."
Local Chamber of Commerce Pres-
ident Nick De Jong called Kristy a
"leader" and an "asset to our city."
A graduate of Atascadero High
School, she plans to attend Cuesta Col-
lege in San Luis Obispo, and hopes
for a career in law enforcement. H
