Two more shots rang out and echoed through the mountains.
Zip! one bullet hit the fire, which had blazed up. Quick as a flash,
Will jumped on it and stamped out the remaining sticks.
"Quick, Jesse, saddle up, hurry up." He jumped to one side just as
another shot rang out.
Spat! the bullet hit not four feet from where he stood, and just where
he was stamping out the fire a second before. Jesse, by this time was
saddling the horses in hot haste. Will had grabbed his rifle and was
trying to locate where the shots were coming from.
"That's them," he breathed just so Jesse could hear him.
"Where are they?" asked Jesse, who by this time had joined Will,
and was gazing up the mountain side also.
