3382 History of Mass Communications
(3-3-0)
A study of the development of mass communications
in America from its European roots to
the present and of its interrelation with
society.
3383 Advertising in Mass Communications
(3-3-0)
An overview of the industry concentrating on
the history, principles, objectives, and the psychological
basis of advertising.
3384 Public Relations in Mass
Communications (3-3-0)
Basic instruction concerning the policies and
procedures of creating and maintaining public
goodwill in business. A close examination of the
multi-faceted methods and principles of public
relations.
3385 Advanced Reporting (3-3-0)
Practical reporting of public affairs. The implementation
of theory through application during
laboratory and off-campus assignments
designed to introduce the student to the techniques
and procedures required to obtain information
of a social, political, or economic
nature.
Prerequisite: MASC 2380 and 2381.
3386 Advanced (Color) Photography (3-1-3)
The theories of color negative film, transparencies,
printing, filtration, and analysis will be
emphasized. Laboratory work will include
development of negatives, transparencies, and
prints.
Prerequisite: MASC 2382 or consent of
instructor.
4381 Feature Writing (3-3-0)
The writing of special articles for newspapers
and other periodicals. Emphasis placed on
research techniques, writing styles, and
graphic design.
4382 Editing (3-3-0)
A practical study of proper editing and headline
writing techniques utilizing the EditWriter 2750.
Heavy emphasis on all phases of preparing
newspaper copy for publication.
Prerequisite: MASC 2380 and 2381.
4389 Practicum in Mass Communications
(3-0-X)
Instruction in the more difficult assignments
with special on-the-job training in cooperation
with an approved local newspaper, broadcasting,
public relations, advertising, or photographic
firm. A course which affords the student anopportunity to practice in his field with Abilenearea
professionals. A minimum of 50 laboratory
hours is required.
Courses in Speech (SPCH)
1301 Speech Communication (3-3-0)
Theory and practice in interpersonal, group,
and formal communication. Laboratory experiences
in self-concept, group interaction, listening
skills, and verbal and non-verbal behavior.
1302 Communication for Teachers (3-3-0)
Theory and practice of the fundamentals of
speech communication as applied to formal
and informal situations; special emphasis on
voice and diction; designed to meet the needs
of prospective teachers. May be substituted for
SPCH 1301 for students in professional
education.
2111, 2112, 2113, 2114 Forensics
Workshop (1-0-1)
A speech and interpretation laboratory to prepare
for forensics tournaments, festivals, and
community programs.
2199, 2299, 2399, 2499 Special Topics
A special interest course focusing on selected
topics not otherwise offered at this level. Example
topics include Voice and Articulation, Interviewing,
and Storytelling. May be repeated for
credit as topic varies.
2301 Speaker-Audience Interaction (3-3-0)
A study of the various types of audience situations
and practice in communicating with
each.
Prerequisite: SPCH 1301 or 1302 or consent
of instructor. Offered spring semester only.
3303 Group Dynamics (3-3-0)
A study of the principles of effective group
leadership and practice in both formal and
informal group situations.
3304 Oral Argumentation (3-3-0)
Principles of persuasion with emphasis on
argumentation and debate in oral communication,
thinking processes, and logic.
4301 Rhetorical Analysis (3-3-0)
The analysis and evaluation of public
speeches, including historical and contemporary
speeches and styles of criticism.
4302 Studies in Communication (3-3-0)
A study of contemporary approaches to communication
theory. Course content will vary
from semester to semester. Example topics
include Communication Theory, Dyadic Communication,
and Directing Speech Co-Curricular
Activities. May be repeated as topic
varies.
