86 COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
. DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY
Objectives
Geology is a profession, and geology
majors are trained to be professional geologists.
Professionalism with its concepts
of knowledge, integrity, and achievement
is stressed throughout the program.
Courses leading to a major in geology
for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of
Science degree are offered. The primary
aim is to give the student a thorough background
in fundamental principles of geology
as related to the aims and objectives
of the total University program.
Majors
As a result of this primary aim, the student
who elects to major in geology will be
sufficiently grounded in geology to continue
into areas of specialization and/or
graduate study in geology.
Bachelor of Arts Degree
A major in Geology on the Bachelor of
Arts degree requires a minimum of 31
semester hours. Courses required are
GEOL 1410, 1411, 2410, 2411, 3311,
3405, 3410, and 4410. GEOL 1401 may
be substituted for GEOL 1410 with departmental
approval. Two courses each in
chemistry, mathematics, and physics, as
designated by the advisor, are also
required. A second sophomore-level English
course is required in addition to the
requirements in the General Outline on p.
59.
Bachelor of Science Degree
A major in Geology on the Bachelor of
Science degree requires a minimum of 37
semester hours. Courses required are
GEOL 1410, 1411, 2410, 2411, 3305,
3311, 3405, 3410, 4311, and 4410. GEOL
1401 may be substituted for GEOL 1410
with departmental approval. Two courses
each in chemistry, mathematics, and
physics, as designated by the advisor, are
also required. The student has the option
of a general minor in science, consisting
of 8 semester hours each from biology,
chemistry, and physics plus at least 6
advanced hours to be chosen from these
sciences or mathematics with the
approval of the student's advisor. Students may also elect to minor in Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics,
or Physics. A second sophomorelevel
English course is required in addition
to the requirements in the General Outline
on p. 59.
Minors -
A minor in Geology on the Bachelor of
Science or Bachelor of Arts degree
requires GEOL 1410, 1411, 2410, 2411,
3405, and 3410. GEOL 1401 may be substituted
for GEOL 1410 with departmental
approval.
Note:
Students choosing geology as a partial
fulfillment of their science requirement will
take GEOL 1401, 1410, or 3301.
