Course 1.-Rhetoric, Literature and Composition
Fall, Wirler, Spring. Three Hours a Week.
Credit i Course.
Rhetoric.-Special attention is given to all the fundamental
and essential rhetorical principles of effective writing
in prose, with particular reference to the four forms of
discourse. Attention is given to the study and analysis of
prose specimens and to English versification.
Written Work.-Weekly themes, limited to one page
during the greater part of the year, are required. Special
themes and written tests may be required frequently. One
thesis each term is required.
Text-books.-Lomer and Ashmun.-The Study and Practice
of Writing English. Nutter, Hersey and GreenoughSpecimens
of Prose Composition.
Course 2.-English Literature
Fall, Winter, Spring. Three Hours a Week.
Credit 1 Course.
English Literature.-The history of English Literature
is studied. This course is designed to give the students
a general view of the history- and development of English
Literature from the Old English period to the present. The
work is based primarily on the study, both outside the class
and in !he class, of selected masterpieces in poetry and
prose. Selections from the Old English period are read in
translations.
Prerequisite. Course 1.
Text-books. Cunliffe, Pyre, and Young-Century Readings.
Crashaw-The Making of English Literature.
Course 3.-Advanced Rhetoric
Fall, Winter, Spring. Three Hours a Week.
Credit 1 Course.
Rhetoric.-This course deals with the principles of
higher rhetoric, not as questions of absolute right or wrong.
but as questions that govern real authorship in action.
