Historical Sketch
In 1888 the Synod of Texas, U. S. A. adopted the plan
of Rev. B. T. McClelland, D.D., for the establishment of
a college at Brownwood. In the fall of the following year
the first session began with Dr. McClelland as President.
In recognition of the life and work of Rev. Daniel Baker,
D.D., as a pioneer Presbyteiian minister in Texas, the institution
was named Daniel Baker College.
The work of the institution in the early years of its
history was overshadowed by financial difficulties. In 1895
the Directors turned it over to the Central Texas Presbytery
of the Southern Presbyterian Church. In 1896 the
college passed into the hands of a stock company. Dr.
McClelland's death, March 10, 1901, left the college in the
hands of its friends, unprepared as to future policy and
plans. Mrs. S. M. S. McClelland, the widow of the Founder,
who had taught in the college from its beginning, acted
as Chairman of the Faculty for the remainder of that session
and through the next. In 1902 a majority of the
stock was tendered the Synod of Texas of the Southern
Presbyterian Church and Rev. E. D. Brown was chosen
President. He served until June, 1904, conducting the
institution as a private enterprise. From 1904 to 1908
