DANIEL BAKER COLLEGE
Freshman Class
The first term is given to the study of Zoology and the
second to Botany. These courses are simple, but are necessary
to a liberal education.
Sophomore Class
Geology is studied the first term, and Astronomy the second.
These studies are more difficult than the Freshman, but
are general in character, and suited to the advancement of the
class.
Junior Physics
(Three lectures and three laboratory hours).
The student is drilled in the fundamental principles underlying
mechanics, light, heat, sound and electricity. In the
laboratory he is required to perform experiments for himself,
and, SO far as is possible, with the material at hand, to construct
devices that will establish the theories acquired in the
class room. He will make mechanical, photometric, acoustic
and electric measurements and will be encouraged to acquire a
practical and working, as well as a theoretic, knowledge.
Senior Chemistry
(Three lectures and six laboratory hours).
The course opens with an introduction to the science,
strict distinction being drawn between chemical and purely
physical changes in matter. The student acquires a descriptive
knowledge of the more common elementary substances and
the laws that have arisen from a knowledge of their properties
and behavior. Compounds and reactions are closely studied
and their relation clearly established. The student is encouraged,
from the knowledge thus obtained, to formulate for himself
equations representiing chemical interactions under conditions
not necessarily laid down in the text book. He is led
to perceive that substances may be separated by the proper use
of his knowledge of their behavior and compounds. Close attention
is fixed on the Periodic Recurrence of chemical proper25
