58 -COMMUNICATION
Students in Journalism and Mass Communications are
required to make a grade of C or better in all courses in
the department that count toward their degrees. Students
are not allowed to count toward a degree more than 39
hours of courses in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Students who wish to study Journalism and Mass
Communication must pass a standardized Grammar,
Punctuation, and Spelling Test (GPS) and demonstrate
acceptable typing skills. Students who make below 50 on
the GPS must take ENGL 109; those who make from 50
to 69 must take ENGL 101. Before enrolling in any
course numbered 200 or above in the division (except
COMJ 233), a student must make a satisfactory score on
a typing examination. "Satisfactory" is defined as typing
at least 35 words per minute (wpm) with no more than
three errors, 40 wpm with no more than four errors, 45
wpm with no more than five errors, or 50 wpm with no
more than six errors. Students who do not pass the
typing test must take BUSA 150.
For students wishing to work in advertising and
graphics, the division cooperates with the Department of
Art in offering an interdisciplinary BA degree in art and
advertising.
Consult the director of the division or the department
chairman for help in scheduling and degree planning.
Also, a special publication, "Degree Planning Guidelines
for the Journalism and Mass Communication Major" is
available in the division office.
Requirements and suggested schedules for the available
course sequences are listed below. Students in each
area should remember also to take any additional
courses required on the basis of the GPS'and typing test
as explained above. Courses within the division should be
taken in the order shown.
